South Florida's Season Comes to an End in Semifinals

ORLANDO, Fla., November 3, 2022 – The University of South Florida women's soccer team's season came to an end in the semifinals of the 2022 American Athletic Conference Tournament to the SMU Mustangs.
SMU took the early lead with a drive down the field, getting past Rosalia Muino Gonzalez (Coruna, Spain) and with a shot that narrowly missed Sydney Martinez (Rincon, Ga.). It was the second time this season that the Bulls have allowed a goal in the first 10 minutes. 12 minutes later, the Mustangs grew their lead to 2-0.
Madison Schwartzenberger had an opportunity to cut the Mustangs lead in half but shot went wide by inches. The Mustangs went up 3-0 with Sammy Nieves second goal of the match.
Daniella Chung (Boca Raton) and Signe Markvardsen (Roskilde, Denmark) gave two chances at scoring, both times narrowly missing the goal.
SMU wasted no time in the second half, scoring their fourth and fifth goal in under 10 minutes.
Sophomore Arden La-Rose (Toronto, Canada) finished out the game in goal. She made one save. Emilie Lajmiri tried to get the Bulls on the board, but her shot was saved by SMU's goalkeeper.

The USF women's soccer team has posted ten consecutive seasons of 10-plus wins under head coach Denise Schilte-Brown. The Bulls made their first NCAA tournament appearance in 2010 and returned in 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021. South Florida has five consecutive seasons with a conference championship, earning the tournament title in 2017, 2019 and 2020 as well as the regular-season title in 2018, 2020 and 2021. The program had its first draft pick and second-highest pick in USF Athletics history with Evelyne Viens being taken with the fifth overall pick in the 2020 NWSL Draft by Sky Blue FC, now Gotham FC.
