TEMPE, Ariz. (Feb. 25, 2022) – The University of South Florida men's tennis team kicked off its participation in the Tempe Elite 8 Tournament at the Kiwanis Tennis Center in Tempe, Ariz. on Friday, falling to Cal Poly, 4-1, on day one of the three-day event.

Sergio Gomez Montesa played a part in both of the Bulls match wins on Friday, teaming up with
Alvin Tudorica to win during the doubles portion on court three, 6-3.

Cal Poly took court two in doubles, 6-3, over
Chase Ferguson and
Antonio Muniz, leaving the doubles point up to South Florida's
Rithvik Bollipalli and
Manuel Goncalves on court one. The duo battled, however, fell in a hard-fought 7-5 affair as the Mustangs took a 1-0 lead.

Gomez Montesa leveled the dual at one-all with a 6-4, 6-2 win on court four in the first match to finish in singles.

Ferguson took his match on court one to three sets after taking the second set, 6-3, however fell, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0.

Bollipalli (4-6, 5-7) and
Ivan Yatsuk (6-4, 2-6, 3-6) put up strong fights on courts six and two, respectively, however were unable to get the Bulls on the board.

Up Next
The Bulls will face No. 34 Memphis/New Mexico on Saturday at noon. Following this weekend, South Florida then returns home to start a season-long five-match homestand, beginning on Wednesday, March 2 against South Alabama at 1:30 p.m.
