USF Softball Splits Contests on Final Day of Weekend Tournament

TAMPA, Fla., March 13, 2022 – The University of South Florida softball team, after run-ruling UMass in their first game of the day, had a 14-game win streak snapped on Sunday with a tough loss to Ohio State in game two.

Vivian Ponn (Fort Myers, Fla.) hit a walk-off home run in game one, her first collegiate home run. Georgina Corrick (Sanford, Fla.) earned the win, putting her at 17-0 on the year, and had her ERA drop to 0.06 after extending her streak of shutout innings to 81.1 innings. She hasn't allowed an earned run in 87.1 innings.

Game 1 – USF 8, UMass 0 (5)
South Florida's offense quickly grabbed the lead in game one. Johns reached to start the inning and stole second to put the pressure on. Two batters later, she came around to score on an RBI from Alanah Rivera (St. Petersburg).

After two quick innings, the Bulls exploded for six runs in the fourth. With the first three batters of the inning reaching, Megan Pierro (Lutz) had a chance with the bases loaded. She singled through the infield to score a pair pushing USF's lead to 3-0. Two batters later, Alexis Swearingen (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) sent her first hit of the year deep to left center for a double that scored another pair of runners. Meghan Sheehan (Forest Hill, Md.) capped the inning with a double down the left field line that also scored a duo of runners to give the Bulls a 7-0 lead.

With a chance to walk it off in the fifth, Ponn wasted no time, sending a 2-2 pitch over the left-center field fence to give the Bulls a run-rule win.

Corrick dealt in the circle once again, earning a complete-game shutout win. The game marked USF's sixth consecutive shutout. At the end of the game, USF had gone 40.1 innings of play without allowing a single run, dating back to the Army game on March 5.

Game 2 – OSU 5, USF
Pitchers controlled play through a majority of the game. Other than a solo home run in the top of the second for Ohio State, neither offense was able to gain much ground on the basepaths.

Ohio State broke the stalemate in the fifth, scoring two on a sacrifice fly and error to expand their lead to 3-0. The Buckeyes added another pair of runs in the seventh to take a 5-0 win.
