Tampa, Fla., April 13, 2022 – The University of South Florida track and field team will split into two squads this weekend, between the Mt. Sac Relays in California and the Tom Jones Memorial in Gainesville.
"We are competing at two outstanding meets this weekend," head coach
Erik Jenkins said. "Mt. Sac Relays is the premiere relay meet on the West Coast. Tom Jones also has a really good line up with some of the top programs set to compete. "
Mt. Sac Relays
The Mt. Sac Relays kicks off with
Eron Carter (Palatka, Fla.) competing in the discus on Thursday at 2 p.m. ET. Carter, who recently broke the program record for the second time this season last weekend at the South Florida Invite, will compete again in the hammer throw later in the weekend.
In other field events,
David Ajama (Lowell, Mass.) will compete in the triple jump to begin Friday's schedule at 2 p.m. ET, followed by him competing again at 6 p.m. in the long jump.
Annia Ashley (Kingston, Jamaica) will compete in the women's long jump, also being conducted at 3 p.m.
To close the field events at the Mt. Sac Relays,
Kobe Babin (Niceville, Fla.) will jump in the pole vault.
In track events,
Shaneylix Davila (Kissimmee, Fla.), who was named the AAC Track Athlete of the Week this week, will compete in the 100 hurdles on Friday at 2:35 p.m. ET, while
Shaniya Benjamin (Tampa, Fla.) and
Hannah Connell (Bridgetown, Barbados) run in the 200 meters on Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET. Davila runs again at 4:35 p.m. ET in the 400 hurdles.
USF will also have entries in both the 4x100 relay and the 4x400 relay which run throughout the weekend.
Tom Jones Memorial
Johann Jeremiah (St. George's, Grenada) begins USF's competition at Florida's Tom Jones Memorial on Friday at 2 p.m. in the men's discus, followed by
Romaine Beckford (Portland, Jamaica) at 3 p.m. in the high jump and
Kendall McDaniel (Loganville, Ga.) and
Loren Johnson (Orange Park, Fla.) in the long jump at 5 p.m to end the day's field events.
Danelson Mahautiere (Roseau, Dominica) and
Monte Parker (Plantation, Fla.) run in the 200 meters at 6:10 p.m. on Friday, followed by
Chakiya Plummer (Hoover, Ala.) in the 400 hurdles at 6:30 p.m.
Sydney Granack (Bradenton, Fla.) represents the USF women in the 5,000 meters at 7:45 p.m., while
Nickolas Kamen (Naples, Fla.), Mikhail Kakoulin (Gettysburg, Pa.) and
Sebastian Edwards close out the day by running in the men's 5,000 at 8:10 p.m.
Alliya Boothe (Bloomfield, Conn.) and
Ameilya Richardson (Cape Coral, Fla.) start competition on Saturday at 10 a.m. in the women's hammer toss, while Plummer begins the day's track events at 12 p.m. in the 100 hurdles.
Victor Steiner (La Libertao, El Salvador) and
Michael Bourne III (Midlothian, Va.) run in the 110 hurdles at 12:20 p.m, while the men's 4x100 relay team will race at 1:10 p.m.
Elijah Wright (Naples, Fla.) leads USF in the 400 meters at 2:40 p.m. and Mahautiere runs in his second event, the 100 meters, at 3:15 p.m.
The meet closes with the 4x400 relays in both men's and women's on Saturday at 4:05 p.m.
About USF Track and Field
The USF track and field team has earned 53 All-America selections and at least one All-American in 10 of the last 12 years, including a record eight athletes claiming 11 honors in 2021. Tampa native Shaniya Benjamin set a program record earning three All-American honors during the 2021 outdoor season, while triple jumper Matthew O'Neal, a 2016 graduate, became USF's first six-time NCAA All-American. Bulls have posted two NCAA runner-up finishes since 2013 - O'Neal (triple jump, 2016) and Courtney Anderson (high jump, 2013). Head coach Erik Jenkins took over the program in 2020 and in the 2021 outdoor season the Bulls posted seven program records and 40 top 10 all-time program marks. USF hosted the 2018 NCAA Track and Field East Preliminary and the 2021 AAC Outdoor Championship at the USF Track and Field Stadium located on the east end of campus.
