Green concludes sophomore campaign at NCAA Tallahassee Regional
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (May 11, 2022) – The University of South Florida's Melanie Green (Medina, N.Y.) wrapped up her record-breaking sophomore season on Wednesday in the final round of the NCAA Tallahassee Regional.
Qualifying and competing as an individual in the regional field, Green was the first player to represent South Florida in the postseason since the Bulls qualified as a team for regionals in 2012.
Green tied for 27th in the field of 62 golfers at the Tallahassee Regional which was played over three days at Seminole Legacy Golf Club. She carded rounds of 77 (+5), 73 (+1) and 75 (+3) to finish with a 54-hole score of 225.
"I want to thank Nick Semuta (swing coach) for helping me before the tournament, Dr. Lee (sport psychologist) for coming to watch me this week, and my coaches for their unwavering support," Green said after the event. "I had a lot of fun and hope to be back again next year!."
The sophomore finished with nine total birdies over the course of the event. She carded one in Monday's opening round, three on Tuesday and fired five in Wednesday's finale.
Green entered Wednesday's final round tied for 20th, but got off to a rocky start before finishing strong. She was six-over-par after four holes, but closed out the last round with all five birdies over the final 13 holes.
Named to the American All-Conference Team for the second time in two seasons, Green concludes her sophomore campaign with multiple program records:
- Single-season scoring average (71.97)
- Single-season birdies (111)
- Single-season rounds of par or better (19)
"It was great for Melanie to experience the NCAA Regional Championship as the culmination of a great sophomore year," said head coach Erika Brennan. "This will serve as a springboard for next season and her best is yet to come."
During her sophomore season, Green earned a top-10 finish in seven of her 11Â outings, including her first collegiate win at the Trinity Forest Invitational in March where she was just one of two players to shoot even par at the event.
Green opened the 2021-22 season by carding a program record score of 205 at the USA Intercollegiate which including an opening-round score of 65 (-7) to also set a new program record for round vs. par. She helped lead South Florida to a fifth-place team finish at the AAC Championship by finishing sixth individually for her second top-10 finish at the conference championship tournament in her young career.
