USF Track and Field Ready for NCAA East Prelims

Tampa, Fla., May 24, 2022 – The University of South Florida track and field team is heading to Bloomington, Ind. for the NCAA East Prelims, where it will have student-athletes compete in 14 different events over the four-day meet.
 
Eron Carter (Palatka, Fla.) begins the meet for USF on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the men's hammer competition. He broke the USF record multiple times this season, including most recently with a personal best of 61.40 meters (201-5) at the AAC Outdoor Championships.
 
Later that day, David Ajama (Lowell, Mass.) starts his two-event competition at the prelims with the long jump at 6 p.m. At the same time, Michael Bourne III (Midlothian, Va.) runs in the first round of the men's 110-meter hurdles.
 
At 6:30 p.m., both Stone Baker (New Port Richey, Fla.) and Kobe Babin (Niceville, Fla.) represent USF in the pole vault, followed by Elijah Wright (Naples, Fla.), who wraps up the first day of competition in the first round of the men's 400-meter dash.
 
On Thursday, Shaniya Benjamin (Tampa, Fla.) and Kendall McDaniel (Loganville, Fa.) start things off at 6 p.m. in the women's long jump while Shaneylix Davila (Kissimmee, Fla.) and Hannah Connell (Bridgetown, Barbados) run in the 100-meter hurdles at the same time. Sanique Walker (Manchester, Jamaica) closes out the day in the women's 400-meter hurdles at 8:20 p.m.
 
Carter competes in his second event of the weekend on Friday at 1 p.m. in the discus throw, followed by Romaine Beckford (Portland, Jamaica), who enters the competition tied for second in the event, in the men's high jump at 2:30 p.m. Ajama also earns his second start of the week in the triple jump at 6 p.m.
 
Friday's competition also features the quarterfinals of the men's 110 hurdles and 400 for Bourne III and Wright, respectively.
 
To close out the prelims on Saturday, the women's 4x100 relay of Zahria Allers-Liburd (Miami, Fla.), Benjamin, Connell and Kadesha Prescott (Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago) run at 5 p.m., while the 4x400 relay of Allers-Liburd, Benjamin, Connell and Walker runs at 8:45 p.m. Saturday also features the quarterfinals of the women's 100 and 400 hurdles.
 
Twelve in each individual event and 12 relay teams at the East Prelims will advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon from June 8-11.
 
About USF Track and Field
The USF track and field team has earned 54 All-America selections and at least one All-American in 10 of the last 12 years, including a record eight athletes claiming 11 honors in 2021. Tampa native Shaniya Benjamin set a program record earning three All-American honors during the 2021 outdoor season, while triple jumper Matthew O'Neal, a 2016 graduate, became USF's first six-time NCAA All-American. Bulls have posted two NCAA runner-up finishes since 2013 - O'Neal (triple jump, 2016) and Courtney Anderson (high jump, 2013). Head coach Erik Jenkins took over the program in 2020 and in the 2021 outdoor season the Bulls posted seven program records and 40 top 10 all-time program marks. USF hosted the 2018 NCAA Track and Field East Preliminary and the 2021 AAC Outdoor Championship at the USF Track and Field Stadium located on the east end of campus.
