TAMPA, Fla., Aug. 1, 2022 – Two University of South Florida track and field student-athletes are going to compete for their respective countries at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.
Romaine Beckford will jump for Jamaica in the high jump, while
Hannah Connell will run for Barbados in the 100-meter hurdles.
Beckford (Portland, Jamaica) starts his competition at 2:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday (Aug. 2) in the qualification round of the high jump. The final round will be on Wednesday (Aug. 3) at 2 p.m. ET.
Beckford, a two-time All-American at USF in the high jump, finished his 2022 seasons by winning the American Athletic Conference individual championships and competing at the NCAA Championships in both the indoor and outdoor high jump. He currently ranks second all-time at USF in the outdoor event, jumping a 2.23m (7-3.75) to win at the prestigious Penn Relays.
Connell (Bridgetown, Barbados) will run in the 100-meter hurdle heats on Friday (Aug. 5) at 5:26 a.m. ET. The finals in the 100 hurdles will be run on Sunday (Aug. 7) at 5:25 a.m. ET.
Connell was very successful in her 2022 collegiate season, qualifying for the NCAA East Prelims in the 100 hurdles as well as the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. She currently ranks fourth all-time at USF in the 100 hurdles, having ran a 13.34 to finish third in the preliminary round at the AAC Outdoor Championships in May.

About USF Track and Field
The USF track and field team has earned 58 All-America selections and at least one All-American in 10 of the last 12 years, including a record eight athletes claiming 11 honors in 2021. Tampa native Shaniya Benjamin set a program record earning three All-American honors during the 2021 outdoor season, while triple jumper Matthew O'Neal, a 2016 graduate, became USF's first six-time NCAA All-American. Bulls have posted two NCAA runner-up finishes since 2013 - O'Neal (triple jump, 2016) and Courtney Anderson (high jump, 2013). Head coach Erik Jenkins took over the program in 2020 and in the 2021 outdoor season the Bulls posted seven program records and 40 top 10 all-time program marks. USF hosted the 2018 NCAA Track and Field East Preliminary and the 2021 AAC Outdoor Championship at the USF Track and Field Stadium located on the east end of campus.
