Gerry Bohanon, a junior transfer from Baylor who helped lead the Bears to a Big 12 Conference championship and a Sugar Bowl victory last season, has been named starting quarterback for the Bulls, Coach Jeff Scott announced Monday.

Bohanon, Gerry ( FB Scrimmage 1)Bohanon, a 6-foot-3, 226-pound right-hander whose first name is pronounced "Gary,'' started 12 games last season for the Bears while totaling 2,523 yards (2,200 passing and 323 rushing) and 27 touchdowns (18 passing and nine rushing). He transferred to USF in May after spring football drills had been completed.

Bohanon was selected over sophomore incumbent Timmy McClain, a 6-1, 198-pound left-hander who started nine games for the Bulls last season while passing for 1,888 yards and five touchdowns in his true freshman year. McClain was a highly touted recruit out of Sanford Seminole High School, which he led to an unbeaten Class 8A state championship in 2020.

Scott will address the choice Tuesday at his weekly press availability (11:15 AM), which can be watched live on Twitter (@USFFootball) and Youtube (USF Football playlist).

Scott said he has been pleased with the depth of his quarterback room, which also includes big-armed Katravis Marsh and true freshman Byrum Brown. The Bulls haven't had a quarterback start every game in a season since 2017, when soon-to-be USF Hall of Fame inductee Quinton Flowers led the Bulls to a 10-2 record, Birmingham Bowl victory and No. 21 final ranking.

Bohanon and McClain had fairly similar statistics following the team's first scrimmage on Saturday. Both displayed a command of the offense, along with passing and rushing skills. Scott has praised the work ethic of each player, saying McClain had an excellent spring and summer, while pointing out Bohanon's attention to detail and exhaustive preparation.

USF opens the 2022 season against the BYU Cougars on Sept. 3 at Raymond James Stadium. That game is set of a 4 p.m. kickoff on ESPNU.
