TAMPA, Fla., Aug. 21, 2022 – The University of South Florida women's soccer program opens its 2022 campaign with a home match against Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday at 6 p.m.
The Bulls enter the season with 15 newcomers on its roster, including 12 incoming freshmen and three transfers. The transfers bring a wealth of experience to an otherwise young team, with
Meghan Root (Arcade, N.Y.), a graduate transfer from Syracuse,
Julianne Hutchison (Aurora, Ill.), a redshirt junior from Jacksonville University, and
Georgia Brown, the reigning CAA Rookie of the Year while at Hofstra, joining the Bulls.
South Florida is coming off its sixth AAC championship in the last five seasons with the 2021 regular season crown. The Bulls also reached the NCAA tournament for the eighth time in program history.
Season Openers
The Bulls boast all-time records of 15-9-3 in season openers and are 17-7-3 in home openers. They have a current win streak of seven games dating back to 2015 in both categories. Last season, USF opened with a 2-1 win over Florida to kick off the year.
Scouting FGCU
Florida Gulf Coast opened its season with a 2-1 loss to Detroit Mercy on Thursday. Kate Russell scored the Eagles' lone goal in the game, with Katie Sullivan spending all 90 minutes in net, making three saves.

South Florida currently leads the all-time series against Florida Gulf Coast, 3-1. The Bulls won the last meeting, 2-1, in 2021 in Fort Myers and boast a two-match winning streak in the series.

The USF women's soccer team has posted ten consecutive seasons of 10-plus wins under head coach Denise Schilte-Brown. The Bulls made their first NCAA tournament appearance in 2010 and returned in 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021. South Florida has five consecutive seasons with a conference championship, earning the tournament title in 2017, 2019 and 2020 as well as the regular-season title in 2018, 2020 and 2021. The program had its first draft pick and second-highest pick in USF Athletics history with Evelyne Viens being taken with the fifth overall pick in the 2020 NWSL Draft by Sky Blue FC, now Gotham FC.
