The Bulls placed ninth at the ACC Semifinals over the weekend.
TAMPA (October 4, 2023) – The University of South Florida sailing team competed in the ACC Women's Semifinals at St. Mary's College on Saturday and finished ninth overall to advance to the ACC Finals later this month.
The ACC Women's Championships is the final regatta in college sailing's fall season. The top 36 teams in the country are divided into two semifinal regattas, each with 18 teams. Only the top half, nine teams, from the two semifinals advance to the Championships. This year's semifinals were hosted by the Naval Academy in Annapolis and St. Mary's College in Maryland.
Conditions were as expected with cool fall temperatures, shifty winds, and excellent competition weather. Early on, USF emerged as a bubble team, fighting to make the top nine, with the other being the host school, St. Mary's.
Seniors Emma Shakespeare and Jewel Kelly started in A Division. Senior Hannah Marsicano filled in the final race, and finished 10th in A division. Juniors Eden Nykamp, Kay Brunsvold, Kalea Woodard, and Marsicano all contributed to a fifth-place finish in B Division, just two points away from fourth. Brunsvold and Woodard took line honors with three first-place finishes in the event.
With combined scores from the A and B divisions, the Bulls pull through to finish ninth overall, just in front of St. Mary's College, and qualified for this year's ACC Women's Finals to be held October 21-22 at Yale University.
