BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (October 5, 2023) – The University of South Florida women's soccer team returned to action on Thursday for an American Athletic Conference match at UAB.
Signe Markvardsen recorded her second goal of the season as USF (6-5-1, 2-1-1 AAC) defeated UAB (4-4-4, 0-1-3 AAC) 1-0.
Gentiana Fetaj recorded the first two shots on goal of the match in the 13th and 14th minutes. In the 29th minute, UAB produced its best scoring chase with a shot inside the box, but
Leire Herraez Gallach was there to keep the match scoreless.
The Bulls outshot the Blazers 10-3 in the first half. Fetaj finished with all three shots on goal for the half.
In the 79th minute,
Serita Thurton made an outstanding play to take the ball away from two UAB defenders. She attacked the end line and then crossed the ball to the middle of the box. Markvardsen was on the receiving end of the pass and beat the UAB keeper. The goal by Markvardsen turned out to be the game-winner.
USF outshot UAB 15-8 and held the advantage with shots on goal 6-3. South Florida held possession for 54 percent of the match.

South Florida returns to the friendly confines of Corbett Stadium for an AAC contest with North Texas. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start on Thursday, Oct. 12.

The 2023 season marks the 17th and final for head coach Denise Schilte-Brown at the helm of the Bulls. Schilte-Brown guided South Florida to the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament in 2010 and the Bulls have made eight total postseason appearances (2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021) in the last 13 years. USF posted five consecutive seasons with a conference championship, winning the regular-season title in 2018, 2020, and 2021, while earning the tournament crown in 2017, 2019, and 2020. USF alum and Olympic Gold Medalist, Evelyne Viens, was selected fifth overall in the NWSL Draft by the Sky Blue FC, now Gotham FC. Viens was one of four Pro Bulls to participate in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.
