Tampa, Fla. (Feb. 11, 2023) – The University of South Florida women's tennis team kicked off their road trip with a victory in Boca Raton, defeating the FAU Owls 4-3
Things got off to a shaky start in the doubles portion of the match. The Bulls duo of
Grace Schumacher and
Margriet Timmermans took control of court one, securing a 6-2 victory. However, on court two the Owls defeated USF's
Sierra Berry and
Ireland Simme 6-3.
The doubles point came down to a back-and-forth dual on court three, with the Bulls'
Laura Pellicer and
Cliona Walsh ultimately falling 5-7.
In singles action, the Bulls came out hot. Winning their first set on five out of the six courts. Things became much closer in the second set, with four of the six courts needing a third set to decide the outcome.
Schumacher was first to claim a point for the Bulls on the day. After winning her first set 6-2, FAU's Martina Kudelova gave her all she had in the second. Kudelova had an early lead in the set before Schumacher stomed back for a 7-5 win to decide court one.
On court three it looked like it was shaping up to be a three-set-thriller. Pellicer narrowly escaped with a 7-6 win against FAU's Lexi Silna in the first set. In the second set, however, Pellicer was able to pull away and coast to a convincing 6-3 win.
FAU responded with a point of their own on court four. After taking the first set against Florida Atlantic's Carla Galmiche 6-4, Marta Falceto Font fell 2-6 and 3-6 in the following two sets.
On court two Berry defeated FAU's Katerina Filip 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 to give the Bulls a 3-2 lead on the day and put them just one point away from the victory. With this point Berry remained a perfect 3-0 in singles on the season.
The match came down to courts five and six, with the Bulls needing just one court to win and the Owls needing both.
South Florida's Timmermans fell 3-6, 6-2, 3-6 on court five, however Walsh defeated Florida Atlantic's Victoria Gomez O'Hayon in a hard-fought three-set competition 7-6, 2-6, 4-3 to secure court six and the match for USF.
