Bulls Third Place Finish at AAC Indoor Championship is Highest Since 2013

Beckford, Ajama, and men’s 4x400m relay claim gold on final day of AAC Championship meet.

Tampa, Fla., Feb. 25 2023 – University of South Florida track and field close out the final day of AAC Indoor Championships with six program records and three victories. Twelve Bulls earned All-AAC performances on the last day of the conference championship meet.
 
"This was a good step in the direction we aspire to compete at," head coach Erik Jenkins said, "The men had several individual performances that rewrote the USF record books and earned valuable points in the team tally. Our team had some solid performances and as a team have a bright future."
 
Romaine Beckford posted a conference and program record leap of 2.26 meters (7-5.00) to earn the men's high jump individual title, which is currently ranked second in the NCAA. Kendell Mosley finished in fourth with a jump of 2.06 meters (6-9.00). David Ajama picked up another conference gold medal in the triple jump with a leap of 15.63 meters (51-3.50), prior to that he placed seventh in the high jump in 1.98 meters (6-6.00). Ajama scored 20 combined points for the Bulls in long, high and triple jump events. 

Annia Ashley finished fourth in the women's high jump with a mark of 1.78m (5-10.00), moving her to second best performance in program history. Nia Robinson placed eighth in the high jump with a mark of 1.69m (5'6.50) and women's triple jump with 12.32m (40-5.00).
 
Johann Jeremiah posted a new program record in the men's shot-put competition and finished in fourth position with a mark of 17.02m (55-10.25).
 
Je'Nyia Burton led off action on the track for the Bulls by eclipsing her program record in the women's 400m with a time of 53.33, finishing second in the competition. Kayla Hugg picked up a seventh-place finish in 55.66.  Meanwhile, in the men's event, Shevioe Reid placed second at 47.27 seconds, followed by Elijah Wright in third at 47.74 and Monte Parker in fourth with 48.14.
 
In the 60m hurdle finals, Shaneylix Davila placed fifth with a time of 8.45 in the women's competition, while Michael Bourne III placed second with 8.02 in the men's event. Zayquan Lincoln posted 6.77 in the men's 60m dash to finish in fourth position, Jaleel Croal finished eighth in 7.05. 
 
Reid broke another program record, once again, in the men's 200 meters, with a time of 20.99, earning a bronze medal and the Bulls' seventh podium of the day. Lincoln followed behind in fifth place with 21.36.
 
To wrap up the final day of competition, the women's 4x400 meter relay team, featuring Shaniya Benjamin, Burton, Hugg, and Doneisha Anderson picked up a second-place finish and a new program record in the event with a time of 3:38.35.
 
The men's 4x400 team of Daunte O'Banion, Reid, Parker and Wright took the gold with a time of 3:09.94, less than one second from the meet record, claiming a new program record as well.
 
This is the most points scored (102.5) and highest team finish (third) for the men's program since 2013, when the Bulls were a member of the Big East Conference. The women team scored 46.25 points to place eighth, the most since joining the AAC in 2014. 
 
 
About USF Track and Field
The USF track and field team has earned 53 All-America selections and at least one All-American in 10 of the last 12 years, including a record eight athletes claiming 11 honors in 2021. Tampa native Shaniya Benjamin set a program record earning three All-American honors during the 2021 outdoor season, while triple jumper Matthew O'Neal, a 2016 graduate, became USF's first six-time NCAA All-American. Bulls have posted two NCAA runner-up finishes since 2013 - O'Neal (triple jump, 2016) and Courtney Anderson (high jump, 2013). Head coach Erik Jenkins took over the program in 2020 and in the 2021 outdoor season the Bulls posted seven program records and 40 top 10 all-time program marks. USF hosted the 2018 NCAA Track and Field East Preliminary and the 2021 AAC Outdoor Championship at the USF Track and Field Stadium located on the east end of campus.
