Tampa, Fla. (March 11, 2023) – USF Women's Tennis came back from down 3-1 to defeat UNF and sweep the back-to-back.
North Florida didn't make things easy for the Bulls Saturday morning. UNF's Kit Gulihur gave the Bulls trouble all match long, coming in at number 78 on the ITA doubles ranking and number 85 on the ITA singles ranking.
In doubles, Gulihur and Ana Paula Melilo took down USF's star duo of
Sierra Berry and
Grace Schumacher 6-3.
The Ospreys also secured a 6-3 doubles win on court two, which gave UNF a 1-0 lead on the match.
In singles, Gulihur continued her strong day. On court one, she defeated USF's Berry 6-3, 6-3.
Meanwhile on court four,
Laura Pellicer had one of her most impressive performances of the season. In the first set, Pellicer defeated UNF's Ana Paula Melilo in a hard-fought 7-5 battle. She followed it up with a dominant 6-0 win in the second set, giving USF its first point of the day.
On court three, USF's
Ireland Simme looked poised to give South Florida another point. She defeated Isabel Oliveira 6-1 in the first set but couldn't seal the deal in the second. Oliveira responded with a 6-2 win in the second set and a 6-3 win in the third set to claim the point for UNF.
With USF down 3-1, things looked bleak for the Bulls. That didn't last long, however.
South Florida's
Marta Falceto Font gave the Bulls a timely point on court five, defeating Kendall Nash 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 to keep USF alive.
Cliona Walsh quickly followed on court six, winning 6-4, 7-5 to tie the match at three apiece.
It all came down to court two where
Grace Schumacher was going head to head with UNF's Annabelle Davis. After securing a convincing 6-2 win the first set, things got much tighter in the second for Schumacher. Davis put up a strong fight and had the set tied at 5-5. Schumacher, however, closed out the set in exhilarating fashion, winning 7-5 and giving USF the match.
The victory marked USF's third in a row, giving the Bulls their longest win-streak of the season and improving their record to 7-5 on the season.
