USF Sailing Finishes T9 in Suspended Competition at St. Mary’s Team Race; Compete next in Duplins Women’s Team Race
Tampa, FLA., March 22, 2023- Bulls competed in the prestigious St. Mary's Team Race in St. Mary's City, Md., finishing ninth in a 12-team field.
The Bulls faced a highly competitive group that consisted of nationally top-ranked No. 1 Stanford, as well as other top Ivy League schools No. 2 Yale, No. 4 Harvard, No. 6 Brown, No. 9 Cornell, and No. 12 UPenn.
Racing conditions Saturday were cold, windy, wet and wild, with winds gusting over 20 knots and high temperatures only in the 40s. USF ended up in a 3-way tie for 9th on Day 1, losing a tie-breaker. Sunday the teams were unable to compete due to there not being enough wind present.
Starters for USF were Freshman Emma Shakespeare paired with Sophomore Olivia Smith, Sophomore Sydney Monahan paired with Sophomore Kay Brunsvold , and Sophomore Heidi Hicks paired with Junior Jewel Kelly. Alternate Freshman Janie Powell was slated to race on Sunday but did not see action.

The USF sailing program has reached the national finals in seven of the last eight years. The Bulls finished in the top 10 during the 2012 and 2013 seasons. The sailing team is based out of St. Petersburg and led by head coach Allison Jolly, a former USA Olympian and 2016 Florida Sports Hall of Fame inductee.
