Jim Beitia Promoted to Assistant Softball Coach
July 18, 2023 | Softball
TAMPA, Fla. July 18, 2023 – The University of South Florida head softball Coach Ken Eriksen announced the promotion of Jim Beitia to assistant coach.
Beitia, who served as the director of operations for the 2023 season, adds a wealth of coaching experience to Eriksen's staff. His coaching career began at California State University Sacramento. The Hornets were ranked as high as number two nationally in his last year there.
The following year he began a six-year stint at The University of Oklahoma, first as an Assistant Coach and then as the Head Coach of the Sooners. In his final season at OU, they were ranked as high as number three nationally. During his time with the Sooners, Beitia worked with All-Americans Becky Burroughs, Brea Moore, and Jill Most.
The next stop would be Knoxville after The University of Tennessee offered him the Head Coaching position of the Lady Vols. He finished his six-year stint with the Lady Vols with a 233-163 record.
Beitia has been to the Women's College World Series five times, with one National Championship, one runner-up, and one third-place finish. He has also been Head Coach of the Spanish National Team, coached in the National Professional Fastpitch League on five occasions, and traveled worldwide with Back Softball, an organization whose mission was to get Softball reinstated on the Olympic program.
"Jim brings us a ton of experience to our newly created assistant coach position. To have another coach on staff with extensive Division 1 experience, along with assistant coach Lisa Navas, as a head coach is a bonus for our entire program. For me personally to have the staff we have with Navas, Beitia, and Karla Claudio-Rivera, that has the playing and coaching experience that they all have will not only help me in our player development philosophy but also when it comes to game management and recruiting. When you commit to going after the best athletes with a high academic standard you need to be on the same page. We are back to that era at USF."
