The Bulls Fall in Hard, Fought Battle Against the Eagles

FORT MYERS, Fla. (August 27, 2023) – The University of South Florida women's soccer team was back in action on Sunday against Florida Gulf Coast University. The Bulls (2-2-0) produced more shots on goal than the Eagles (2-1-0), 12-2, but FGCU defeated USF, 2-0, in a hard, fought battle.

South Florida dominated the time of possession, 65-35 percent. The Bulls started the match off strong as Anna Sutter rattled off the match's first shot just two minutes into the contest. USF continued to pressure the FGCU defense with eight shots in the first 23 minutes of action.

The Eagles produced their first shot on target, their second shot of the match, in the 25th minute and were able to find the back of the net.

USF tallied 11 shots in the opening stanza, with eight of those on frame, while FGCU had four shots, with one on target.

The second half was a lot like the first half as the Bulls ripped off 11 shots, with four balls on target. The Eagles scored their second goal with only their second shot on target in the 57th minute. FGCU went on to win the contest 2-0.

The 2023 season marks the 17th and final for head coach Denise Schilte-Brown at the helm of the Bulls. Schilte-Brown guided South Florida to the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament in 2010 and the Bulls have made eight total postseason appearances (2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021) in the last 13 years. USF posted five consecutive seasons with a conference championship, winning the regular-season title in 2018, 2020, and 2021, while earning the tournament crown in 2017, 2019, and 2020. USF alum and Olympic Gold Medalist, Evelyne Viens, was selected fifth overall in the NWSL Draft by the Sky Blue FC, now Gotham FC. Viens was one of four Pro Bulls to participate in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.
