TAMPA, Fla. (September 28, 2023) – The University of South Florida women's soccer team (5-5-1, 1-1-1 AAC) was back at the friendly confines of Corbett Stadium for an American Athletic Conference showdown with East Carolina (7-2-3, 2-0-1 AAC) on Thursday. The Bulls and Pirates battled for the top spot in the AAC East and ECU came out on top 2-0.
Gentiana Fetaj recorded the match's first shot on goal, but the ECU keeper made a diving stop.
The Pirates recorded their first chance on the match in the 28th minute, but
Leire Herraez Gallach parried the shot over the crossbar. In the 35th minute,
Georgia Brown made a huge team save to keep the match level.
ECU was able to find the back of the net on a shot by Lucy Fazackerley and took a 1-0 lead into the half. The Pirates added a second goal on a penalty kick in the 76th minute, which Abby Sowa converted.
The Bulls recorded three shots on goal in the second half, two of them by
Gentiana Fetaj.
Notable
· USF was held to zero corner kicks in the first half, which is just the third time this season the Bulls did not have a corner in a half.
· USF was shut out for the first time against ECU in the 16 matches and the first win in Tampa.

The 2023 season marks the 17th and final for head coach Denise Schilte-Brown at the helm of the Bulls. Schilte-Brown guided South Florida to the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament in 2010 and the Bulls have made eight total postseason appearances (2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021) in the last 13 years. USF posted five consecutive seasons with a conference championship, winning the regular-season title in 2018, 2020, and 2021, while earning the tournament crown in 2017, 2019, and 2020. USF alum and Olympic Gold Medalist, Evelyne Viens, was selected fifth overall in the NWSL Draft by the Sky Blue FC, now Gotham FC. Viens was one of four Pro Bulls to participate in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.
