USF Women’s Tennis wraps homestand with 4-3 comeback win

The Bulls rallied to defeat North Texas and improve to 4-1 at home this season.

TAMPA (February 11, 2024) – The University of South Florida women's tennis team (4-3) staged another late comeback victory on Sunday afternoon as the Bulls rallied for a 4-3 triumph over the University of North Texas Mean Green (4-3).

South Florida won three of four matches during the homestand, including a thrilling 4-3 win on Wednesday that came down to the final court, much like Sunday's match. The Bulls have trailed after the doubles point in six of seven matches this spring, but continue to show their collective grit in singles play.

"Our team is proving once again that we can beat very good teams with our singles," said head coach Cristina Moros."

Grace Schumacher and Nadja Bay Christians were victorious on Court 1 in doubles play, but North Texas took the other two courts for the team point.

The Mean Green pulled ahead 2-0 in early singles action before Schumacher and Melisa Senli won in straight sets on Court 1 and 2, respectively, to knot the team score. Senli defeated the reigning AAC Tennis Player of the Week in her match.

North Texas went back in front, 3-2, but the Bulls answered to secure the win. Ireland Simme, a late addition to the singles lineup, tallied a 6-4, 6-3 win on Court 6 and on the final court remaining, for the second time in five days, Gargi Pawar, notched the deciding victory for USF.

Pawar improved to 5-1 in singles play while Senli's record stands at 4-0 this season.

"Grace and Melisa did a fantastic job of taking care of business on the top two courts," added Moros. "Ireland played tough to close out her first set and carried that into the second set and ran away with it. Gargi has proven she is tough as nails when the match is on the line and she did that again today. I'm proud of the team for winning three of our last four matches and look forward to our matches next week in Louisiana."

Up Next
The Bulls travel to Louisiana for a pair of matches next week beginning on Friday, February 16 at LSU and then on Sunday, February 18 at Tulane. Following that road trip, USF returns home for an eight-match homestand which will exhaust their 2024 home schedule.
