USF Women’s Sailing Rally Cut Short By Unruly Weather

Blistering winds called for racing results only from Saturday to be counted

March 11, 2024

TAMPA (March 12, 2024) – The University of South Florida sailing team placed tenth overall in the Jen Harris Women's Team Race Regatta while racing in terrible weather conditions two weekends in a row.

Against stiff competition at the Naval Academy, the Bulls ended up drawing the short straw. The Jen Harris Women's Team Race Regatta hosted by Navy had 12 teams competing. Saturday's racing featured drenching rain with 50 degree temperatures the entire day. One full round robin was completed and USF ended the day with a 3/8 record, tied with host Navy for 9th, but again losing the tie-breaker. To demonstrate the vagaries in team racing, two of the USF victories were against the 7th and 8th place teams, Tulane and Old Dominion, but their won-loss records placed them ahead of the Bulls.

The cold front cleared out on Sunday and the field was divided into the top 6 in Gold and the remaining 6 in Silver. Winds were blustery, 15-28 knots. USF was off to a good start, with a 1-1 record and hoping for a top Silver fleet finish, however by noon the winds continued to build, with gusts over 30 recorded and many teams capsized. Racing was called for the day so only the results from Saturday counted.
