South Florida Tops Stetson to Close Out Non-Conference Schedule

TAMPA, Fla. (September 15, 2024) – The University of South Florida women's soccer team returned to the friendly confines of Corbett Stadium for the final non-conference match of 2024 against Stetson. Georgia Brown and Anna Sutter scored goals as the Bulls defeated the Hatters 2-0.

With the win, South Florida improved to 5-1-2 on the season, while Stetson fell to 5-3-0.

Stetson recorded the first shot on goal of the match in the ninth minute, but Leire Herraez Gallach was there for the save.

In the 18th minute, Sadie Sider-Echenberg put USF's first shot on goal, but the Stetson keeper made the save.

The match was scoreless at the break. The Bulls outshot the Hatters 11-4 in the opening stanza. South Florida put four shots on goal while Stetson had two.

In the 53rd minute, Georgia Brown collected a ball just inside the attacking third and dribbled the ball towards the box. With a defender closing on her, Brown ripped a shot from just outside the box that tailed away from the diving Stetson keeper and into the back of the net.

In the 81st minute, the Bulls connected multiple passes that led to the next scoring opportunity. Serita Thurton received the ball inside the box. After she beat a defender, she chipped the ball toward the back post where Sutter had the easy header to put USF up 2-0.

The Bulls' defense was stout yet again and limited the Hatters to just two shots on goal, both in the first half. Herraez Gallach improved to 5-1-2 on the season in goal for USF and posted two saves in the match.

Offensively, South Florida outshot Stetson 23-5, including a 12-2 margin on shots on goal. Sutter and Brown scored their fifth and fourth goals, respectively, while Thurton dished out her third assist on the season.

The 2024 season will be the first with Chris Brown at the helm. He spent the last 17 seasons as the associate head coach. Brown helped lead the Bulls to three AAC regular season titles, three AAC Tournament titles, and eight NCAA Tournament appearances – winning a conference title every year from 2017-21 while making five straight NCAA appearances during that period. Brown helped lead the Bulls to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2010, a program-record 16 wins and program-best NCAA Tournament third-round appearance in 2019, both conference regular season and tournament titles in 2020, and a string of 10 straight seasons with 10 or more wins (2012-21). Brown has helped lead the Bulls to every NCAA appearance in program history, including two appearances in the second round, and three AAC Championship Game appearances.

As associate head coach, he mentored the program's first All-American and recent USF Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Evelyne Viens, who went on to earn three total All-America honors and an Olympic gold medal with the Canadian National Team at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo. Goalie Sydney Martinez (2020) and forward Sydny Nasello (2020 and 2021) also earned All-America honors and were among the Bulls that have earned a total of eight AAC Offensive Player of the Year, AAC Midfielder of the Year, AAC Defensive Player of the Year or AAC Goalkeeper of the Year honors. Players he has coached hold every program's individual record and most, if not all, of the top 10 marks in every category.
