South Florida Welcomes Rice for AAC Clash on Thursday

TAMPA, Fla. (September 18, 2024) – The University of South Florida women's soccer team is back in action on Thursday for an American Athletic Conference contest with Rice. The Bulls (5-1-2, 0-0-1) and the Owls (7-1-1, 1-0-0) are scheduled for a 7 p.m. first touch on ESPN+.
 
Thursday is our international night and concessions will feature some international food items.
 
On Monday, Georgia Brown was named the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week. Leire Herraez Gallach and Anna Sutter earned spots on the AAC Honor Roll.
 
Taking Your Shot
The Bulls are tied for 14th in the NCAA with 20.00 shots per match, which is second in the AAC. USF is tied for 14th in the country and is second in the conference with 9.63 shots on goal per match. The Bulls have tallied 20 or more shots in five of the eight matches this season. South Florida posted 23 against Stetson, 20 against UCF, 25 against FGCU, 40 against Southern, and 21 against Jacksonville. South Florida set a new Corbett Stadium record with 40 shots against Southern on August 21.
 
High-Octane Offense
The Bulls are tied for 55th in the NCAA with 18 goals, which is third in the conference. The 23 assists are tied for 19th in the nation and are tied for third in the AAC. South Florida is tied for 40th in the country with 59 points, which is third in the conference. With 2.25 goals per match, the Bulls are tied for 52nd in the country and are fourth in the conference in scoring offense.
 
Bulls at a Glance
Anna Sutter paces the squad with five goals, which are tied for 52nd in the NCAA and tied for third in the conference. Her 12 points are tied for 67th in the NCAA and tied for fifth in the AAC. Georgia Brown is second on the team with four goals and 10 points. Micahela Hill is third on the team with six points, two goals and two assists. Sadie Sider-Echenberg, Serita Thurton, Peyton Felton, Gentiana Fetaj, Sarah Brunner, Sophia Cabral, and Elyse Thornton each have one goal for the year. Fetaj and Thurton are tied for the team lead with three assists. Sutter, Brown, Hill, Sider-Echenberg, and Ava Rightmire are tied for third on the team with two assists. Seven players have dished out one assist on the year.
 
Defensively, Leire Herraez Gallach has picked up the decisions in all seven matches and is 5-1-2 on the year. She has made 17 saves and surrendered three goals on the season. Her save percentage of .850 is 46th in the NCAA and is second in the AAC. Her goals-against average of .448 is 29th in the country and first in the conference. Logan McGruder has made five saves and has surrendered four goals in three matches.
 
Series History with Rice
South Florida and Rice will meet for just the third time on Thursday. The Bulls a 1-0-1 against the Owls. The two sides battled to a 1-1 draw in last season's meeting. This will be the first time that Rice has made the trip to Tampa.
 
Scouting the Owls
Leah Chancey leads Rice with 12 points and five goals. Her five goals are tied for 52nd in the country and tied for third in the conference. Jules Johnston is second on the team with seven points, three assists and two goals. Kallie McKinney is the only other Owl with multiple goals with two. Allie Love has a team-high four assists, which are tied for 38th in the NCAA and tied for fifth in the AAC. Chancey, McKinney, Carsyn Martz, Catarina Albuquerque, Taylor Rish, and Dayo Tennyson all have two assists each. Faith Hutchins has played all 790 minutes in goal for the Owls. She has a record of 7-1-1. She has 53 saves on the season and has surrendered eight goals. Her save percentage of .869 is 38th in the nation and best in the conference.

The 2024 season will be the first with Chris Brown at the helm. He spent the last 17 seasons as the associate head coach. Brown helped lead the Bulls to three AAC regular season titles, three AAC Tournament titles, and eight NCAA Tournament appearances – winning a conference title every year from 2017-21 while making five straight NCAA appearances during that period. Brown helped lead the Bulls to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2010, a program-record 16 wins and program-best NCAA Tournament third-round appearance in 2019, both conference regular season and tournament titles in 2020, and a string of 10 straight seasons with 10 or more wins (2012-21). Brown has helped lead the Bulls to every NCAA appearance in program history, including two appearances in the second round, and three AAC Championship Game appearances.
 
As associate head coach, he mentored the program's first All-American and recent USF Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Evelyne Viens, who went on to earn three total All-America honors and an Olympic gold medal with the Canadian National Team at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo. Goalie Sydney Martinez (2020) and forward Sydny Nasello (2020 and 2021) also earned All-America honors and were among the Bulls that have earned a total of eight AAC Offensive Player of the Year, AAC Midfielder of the Year, AAC Defensive Player of the Year or AAC Goalkeeper of the Year honors. Players he has coached hold every program's individual record and most, if not all, of the top 10 marks in every category.
