TAMPA, Fla. (February 23, 2025) – The University of South Florida's St. Petersburg campus hosted a thrilling Women's Regatta on February 22-23, 2025, drawing seven teams from across the nation. This was the first time South Florida has hosted the women's regatta of the 2025 season. The event featured teams from College of Charleston, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Jackson University, University of Hawaii, Rollins College and Florida State University.
Racing began on Saturday at 10 a.m. under an 8-9 knot northeast breeze, with the course set inside Bayboro Harbor. The flat waters allowed for quick and competitive races, each lasting between 7 to 10 minutes. By 1:30 p.m., the first round of the 21-race round robin rotation was completed, and the competitors were given a 45-minute break. However, as forecasted, the wind died down, and the second round began in a light 5-knot breeze. Only seven races were completed before the conditions became too light to continue. Despite hopes that the sea breeze would fill in sooner, the racing was delayed, and competitors returned to shore for the day.
On Day 2, the goal of completing the second full rotation was nearly achieved, with 19 out of the 21 races completed, finalizing the standings.
The Bulls finished third with a 6-5 record, rounding out the podium. Additionally, College of Charleston took first place with an unbeaten 12-0 record, while MIT, a top-ten finisher at the 2024 National Championships, finished second with a 9-2 record.
"It was a fantastic weekend of racing, and I couldn't be prouder of how the team handled the conditions," said head coach
Allison Jolly. "The sailors demonstrated strong skill and teamwork throughout the event, and our third-place finish is a great result. We're excited about the momentum this gives us as we head into the rest of the season."
