South Florida Men's Tennis put together a dominant doubleheader performance Friday at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts, taking down No. 55 Charlotte, 6-1, before sweeping Florida Gulf Coast, 4-0.
The Bulls opened the day with one of their strongest wins of the season, defeating a higher-ranked Charlotte squad in convincing fashion. USF secured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 (6-1) and No. 3 (6-3), setting the tone early.
In singles, Hugo Car led from the top with a dominant 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 1. Toto Llanes followed with a commanding 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 6, while Gughi Verdese added another point with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5. Agustin Cuellar continued the momentum at No. 4, winning 6-1, 6-4.
At No. 2, Elijah Cham delivered in one of the most competitive matches of the day, battling to a 6-3, 4-6, 10-4 win to cap off the Bulls' statement victory. USF finished with five singles wins in total, showcasing depth across the lineup in the ranked win.
The momentum carried straight into the evening match, where the Bulls completed a clean sweep over FGCU.
USF once again dominated doubles play, quickly clinching the point with commanding 6-2 wins at both the No. 1 and No. 2 positions.
In singles, the Bulls took a point by default on Court 6. James Newton, who stepped into the singles lineup on Court 5, delivered a confident 6-3, 6-1 victory. With limited singles opportunities this season, Newton made the most of his chance and played a key role in securing the sweep. Hugo Car clinched the sweep for the Bulls with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1.Â
USF held strong leads on multiple other courts before play was halted, underscoring the team's control throughout the match. Elijah Cham and Timeo Gaillard both had the upper hand against their opponents in the second set, just points away from wins.Â
The Bulls' doubleheader sweep highlights a complete team effort, including a ranked win and contributions up and down the lineup. They will return home on Thursday, April 9, for their last home match against UNF.Â
