Kevin Patrick was named USF defensive line coach in December 2022, returning Patrick to Tampa for his third stint with the Bulls.

Patrick first established himself as an outstanding recruiter and coach while serving as USF defensive ends coach on head coach Jim Leavitt’s first USF staff (1996-98) and again in a five-year run from 2008-12 in which he coached defensive ends (2008), defensive line (2009) and defensive tackles (2010-12) and helped to produce first-team All-Big East and NFL defensive linemen Jason Pierre-Paul, George Selvie and Terrell McClain.

The first season of his return USF, he helped the Bulls produce 12 team and 16 individual records as the Bulls capped the biggest turnaround in program history (a six-win improvement) with a 45-0 rout of Syracuse in the Boca Raton Bowl. Defensive end Tramel Logan tied a program record with three defensive touchdowns and the bowl game shutout marked the largest in NCAA bowl game history.

USF finished 12th nationally and second in The American collecting 24 turnovers, including 10 fumbles to rank No. 16, and the Bulls’ four defensive touchdowns on the year ranked No. 8 nationally. USF stood No. 7 posting 7.5 tackles for loss per game as defensive tackle Rashad Cheney earned All-AAC honorable mention.

Patrick came to USF after three seasons coaching outside linebackers at FAU (2020-22). His 17-year coaching career also includes serving as defensive line coach at NC State (2017-19), Texas Tech (2016) and North Texas (2014-15). He also spent 10 years in private business (1998-2007).

While at FAU (2020-22), Patrick’s 2020 unit was part of a group that tied for the C-USA lead with 25 sacks, in just nine games. The defense ranked 10th nationally in scoring defense (17.4) and 24th in total defense (341.6 ypg).

At NC State (2017-19) he coached Nagurski Trophy (nation’s top defender) winner Bradley Chubb, who also earned the Hendricks Award (top defensive end) and ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors. A first-team All-ACC selection, Chubb led the ACC in sacks (10) and tackles for loss (26) while ranking second nationally in TFLs and seventh in sacks. NC State ranked second in the ACC, and 29th nationally in rushing defense (131.5 ypg) in 2018. All four members of the 2017 Wolfpack defensive line were selected in the 2018 NFL Draft.

In his two seasons at North Texas (2014-15), the team compiled 52 sacks, including 33 in his first year - the fifth-best mark in school history.  The program ranked among the top Conference USA pass rushing units and finished the 2014 season ranked No. 25 nationally in team sacks per game (2.75) and among the nation’s top-50 units in total defense. The Mean Green was led by the emergence of defensive end Chad Polk, who, despite an undersized frame, became an All-CUSA selection after totaling 25 tackles and a team-high 5.5 sacks.

While previously at USF (1996-98; 2008-12), Rivals named him one of the nation’s top-25 recruiters in 2009, as well as the top recruiter in the Big East Conference. The recognition came after USF signed four four-star recruits, including Pierre-Paul, Ryne Giddens, Jacquain Williams and Julius Forte.

Pierre-Paul garnered first team All-America honors and was selected No. 15 overall in the 2010 NFL Draft. Selvie became the program’s first two-time, first-team (2007 & 2008) and consensus (2007) All-American and was later inducted into the USF Athletic Hall of Fame (2019) after a six-year NFL career. Selvie his career as the program’s all-time career leader in both sacks (29), tackles for a loss (69.5) and forced fumbles (9). McClain earned first-team All-Big East honors and was selected in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft.

USF regularly ranked among the nation’s top defenses during Patrick’s tenure as the Bulls finished among the NCAA’s top-25 units in total defense four times. The Bulls also ranked among the nation’s top-25 three times in team tackles for a loss (2010, 2011 and 2013) and as high as fourth in total sacks (2011).

A native of West Palm Beach, Fla., Patrick is a member of the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame (2015), having earned AP First-team All-America and Big East Defensive Player of the Year honors in 1993 as a defensive end and helped lead the Hurricanes to two national championships with victories over Alabama in the 1990 Sugar Bowl and Nebraska in the 1992 Orange Bowl. He competed in four major bowls as a player, including the Fiesta (1993), Orange (1992), Sugar (1990) and Cotton (1989).

Named the Hurricanes Team MVP in 1993, he led Miami with 10 sacks and finished his career with 174 tackles, and 23 sacks, the fifth-highest total in program history. He was also a two-year letter winner in track and field at Miami, throwing the shot put and discus during his junior and senior years. His brief stint in the NFL was hampered by shoulder injuries.

Patrick is a 1994 graduate of Miami with a B.S. in business administration. He and his wife, Rachell, have two daughters, Grace and Belle.
