Greg Byrd has been a full-time member of the University of South Florida Athletic Medicine staff since 2011. In his time at USF, Greg has held multiple positions and worked with a wide variety of sports, leading to his current role as the Assistant Director of Athletic Medicine and Director of Basketball Sports Medicine entering the school year. Greg’s primary sport responsibility is the Men’s Basketball program with supervisory responsibility over Women's Basketball, Track & Field, Baseball, Men’s Soccer and a Utility Residency AT Position that will also service USF’s 3-Peat National Championship Cheer & Dance Program. Prior to his current role, he spent time as the Athletic Trainer for the Track and Field, Cross Country, and Men’s Soccer programs. In his career, Byrd has been ATC for 15+ NCAA Championship Teams, with 7 finishes in the top 4 Nationally, 3 in the top 2. He has worked with countless NCAA National Qualifiers, Multiple USA Olympic Trial Qualifiers, 20+ Professionals Soccer, Football & Basketball Players, as well as 15+ World Championship/Olympic Qualifiers and Medalists.

During this time, he has provided care for teams accomplishing two of the highest Big East Conference finishes in USF T&F/XC history with a second place and third place finish respectively for the men & women's outdoor teams. Byrd has also provided care for USF's two USA Olympic trial qualifiers & numerous NCAA championship qualifiers. Outside of his Athletic Training responsibilities, Greg is responsible for the education and development of the Resident Assistant Athletic Trainers, facilitation of the Exercise Science & Clinical Observation AT Internship Programs, Special Projects, Hiring, Product Acquisition, Department Development and Contract Structuring. He also is the Director of the USF Sports Medicine Camp & Championships Medical Coverage.
Prior to his long tenure at USF, Byrd served as the Interim Head Athletic Trainer at the Florida Institute of Technology from 2010 – 2011. While in this role, he coordinated healthcare, injury prevention, injury assessment, development and application of rehabilitation and therapeutic modalities in clinic, practice, and competition settings for 19 Division II sports with 300+ athletes. He facilitated daily recorded documentation and Athletic Training Room maintenance and coordinated with Team Physicians and part-time athletic trainers.

Since 2008, his career progression includes work as the Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer for Florida State University Track & Field and Cross Country. His work at FSU contributed to eight ACC championships and several cross country, indoor and outdoor top four National Championship finishes in his two years with the program. During his time at FSU, Byrd helped provide medical coverage for numerous Olympic and/or World Championship qualifying athletes, including traveling to USA Championships to provide coverage for FSU competitors. Byrd also helped provide coverage for pre-season practices and home games for football. He graduated from Florida State University in 2010 with his Master of Science in Sport Administration/Management.

Byrd, a Bulls alumnus, earned his Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from the USF Sports Medicine Program in 2008. He garnered an eclectic clinical experience through his rotations with Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Football, Track and Field, Cross Country, Softball, Tennis, Baseball, Volleyball, and Men’s Basketball. He was recognized as Athletic Training Student of the Year in and a member of the first athletic training class to graduate from the USF College of Medicine. This education has allowed Byrd to hold previous and a current academic professorial positions as an instructor to the next generation of Athletic Trainers.
Byrd is a BOC Certified Athletic Trainer, Florida Licensed Athletic Trainer. He holds additional certifications in CPR/AED, Professional Rescuer, IV Therapy Certified, Graston Level 1 and 2, and Functional Range Release. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association, ATAF West Coast Representative & AISM Secretary.

Byrd is a native of Jackson, Mississippi and currently resides in Tampa. He is the son of Chester and Chezelis Byrd, one of two children along with his older sister, Stacey. He enjoys food touring, outdoor activities, and photography in his spare time.
