Helm was named Nickels Coach/Assistant Defensive Backs Coach in March of 2025, joining head coach Alex Golesh’s third staff at South Florida.
Helm arrived at USF after spending the previous three seasons on staff at Florida Atlantic, where he transitioned seamlessly from standout student-athlete to rising defensive coach.
Helm assumed the role of Assistant Inside Linebacker Coach at FAU in January of 2025 after serving as the program’s Interim Linebackers Coach for the final two games of the 2024 season. He was elevated to defensive analyst in January of 2023, reuniting with Roc Bellantoni—his first defensive coordinator as a player. Helm had previously joined the coaching staff as a graduate assistant in the spring of 2022 while already enrolled in graduate school. Known as a “player-coach” throughout his collegiate career, Helm quickly earned respect as a detail-oriented and energetic teacher on the practice field.
As a player, Helm was a six-year member of the FAU program, joining the Owls in 2016 and contributing under three different head coaches and several defensive coordinators. He played five active seasons and was known for his leadership and football IQ, often serving as an on-field extension of the coaching staff in his final years.
Helm finished his playing career with 173 total tackles, including 97 in his senior campaign in 2021. He added two interceptions, 10 passes defended, and four fumble recoveries—three of which came in his final season. Helm was a key contributor on two Conference USA championship teams and appeared in three bowl games, winning two.
He was named to Pro Football Focus’ All-Conference USA Third Team as a senior and earned Conference USA Honorable Mention recognition in both 2020 and 2021. His 52-yard fumble return in 2021 ranks as the second-longest in program history.
A product of Bartram Trail High School in Florida, Helm played for head coach Darrell Sutherland and was a standout in the Class 7A ranks. He earned First Team All-State and First Team All-Conference honors after recording 101 tackles and five interceptions as a senior. He graduated with a 3.8 GPA.
Helm earned his undergraduate degree from FAU in 2022 and completed his MBA in 2023. He is one of four boys and the younger brother of former FAU football player Grant Helm. He is the son of Greg and Kelly Helm and was born on October 10, 1997.
