Varsity Club Video Interviews: Catch Up With USF Greats

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Last Friday, the USF Bulls Club and Varsity Club put on the third of four Verizon Around the Horns (ATH) Golf events at The Club at Eaglebrooke golf course, where a number of Bulls fans, boosters and supporters had the opportunity to play a round of golf and enjoy dinner with USF coaches, legends and dignitaries.

GoUSFBulls.com's and men's basketball play-by-play announcer Jim Lighthall caught up with a few of the Varsity Club members in attendance to discuss their time at USF, what they are doing now, and even how their golf game went on the afternoon.

Check out BullsVision exclusive interviews with former basketball players Anddrikk Frazier, B.B. Waldon and Altron Jackson, women's golfer Dale Eggeling, track and field athlete Kemel Thompson and football players Santiago and Bill Gramatica.

Frazier competed for three seasons for USF from 1996-99, securing his best season during the 1996-97 campaign, when he started 25 of the team's 27 games, averaging 6.7 points and 2.8 rebounds per game. Frazier competed in 84 games all together during his career, making 35 starts. He averaged 4.8 points per game for his career.

Waldon ranks fourth in USF history with 1,869 points, and was a three-time All-Conference USA second-team honoree. He is the all-time rebound leader for USF and ranks second in steals, third in field goals made and fourth in attempted field goals. The program's only four-time All-C-USA selection after also taking third-team honors as a senior, Waldon also shares the program's all-time record for field goals made in a game with 17 against TCU Jan. 5, 2002.

Jackson stands second in USF history in scoring, as he is one of two players to score more than 2,000 points (2,017). C-USA's all-time leading scorer, Jackson was a three-time All-C-USA selection, one of two players in USF history to be so named. Jackson ranks second on the USF all-time list in field goals made, free throws made and field goals attempted, third in free throws attempted and fourth in steals. He owns the USF record for most steals in a game with 10.

Eggeling began competing on the LPGA Tour in the Summer of 1976 and has earned more than $2.3 million over her career. Having last played on the Tour in 2004, Eggeling owns three career wins and 73 top-10 finishes. As an amateur, Eggeling won the National Junior College title. She was also the runner-up at the 1974 Eastern Amateur and a semifinalist at the 1974 Doherty Cup.

Thompson competed for USF in the mid-90s and is a former Olympian, having competed in the 400-meter hurdles for Jamaica in Sydney in 2000 and Athens in 2004. He finished second twice in the event in the IAAF World Athletics Final, in both 2003 and '05, and finished third at the Commonwealth Games in 2006. Thompson last competed professionally in 2007.

Bill Gramatica played for the Bulls before moving on to a four-year career in the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals and the Miami Dolphins. During his tenure in the NFL he made good on 77.1 percent of field goal tries and made 60-of-61 extra point attempts. Gramatica's collegiate career at the University of South Florida was an impressive one. He owns most of the school's kicking records, including longest field goal in school history at 63 yards. The Arizona Cardinals drafted the now 27 year-old kicker in the 4th round (98th overall) of the 2001 NFL Draft.

Santiago Gramatica, a four-year letterwinner at USF, holds numerous school records including most career points (246), most field goals made in a season (16), most field goals made in a career (38), career PAT's attempted (147) and career PAT's made (132).

The group enjoyed the challenging course and a truly great event for alumni and fans alike.

The Verizon USF Around the Horns Coaches Tour took the Bulls to various Florida regions to provide an opportunity for local fans to spend the day with the Bulls. Participants had the opportunity to play a full round of golf, followed by dinner with USF coaches, administrators and former student-athletes. The four events included stops at the Bayou Club (Pinellas County) June 5, Lakewood Ranch (Manatee and Sarasota counties) June 19, The Club at Eaglebrooke golf course (Polk County) last Friday, and Tampa Palms Country Club (Hillsborough and Pasco counties) on Monday.

The mission of the Varsity Club is to encourage past USF athletics members to be lifelong members of the USF Athletics family and to strengthen the bond between them, the University, and the department of intercollegiate athletics. The Bulls Varsity Club will strive to provide its members with the opportunity to foster and maintain relationships across different sports and generations thus promoting the interest and mission of the University of South Florida.
