
Women's Soccer Loses Final Match of Season to Syracuse, 3-2

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (October 22, 2005) ? The University of South Florida women's soccer team (7-7-3, 2-6-3 BIG EAST) lost its final match of the season to BIG EAST foe Syracuse (7-9-3, 3-6-2 BIG EAST), 3-2, knocking it out of the race for the final spot in the BIG EAST Conference Tournament.
Due to the threat of Hurricane Wilma, the match was moved to Valley Fields on the campus of Marquette University. The match was originally scheduled to be played at USF Soccer Stadium.
Syracuse got on the board early during the 10th minute of the match when Nicole Spartano scored the first of her two goals on the afternoon, tapping in short-range shot from four yards out.
Her second goal of the game came during the 34th minute when she blasted a right-footed shot from 11 yards out past USF goalkeeper, Casey Garrett, putting the Orange on top, 2-0.
USF fought back and cut the deficit in half when Katie Reed was fouled by SU's Jill Conoboy in the penalty box and scored off a penalty kick in the 41st minute.
Syracuse put the game away when Amanda Arcuri recovered a scramble and placed a shot that was saved by Garrett, but SU's Samantha Hawn recovered the rebound to put the Orange up, 3-1.
USF added an additional goal in the 89th minute off the foot of Jeanette Dyer from Michelle Buskey. The goal was Dyer's first of the season.
The loss puts USF out of the race for the final postseason spot in the ?A' Division. Connecticut, Marquette, West Virginia, Syracuse and either Pittsburgh or St. John's will represent the ?A' Division.
