TAMPA, Fla. (Oct. 28, 2005) ? The USF volleyball team dropped its third-straight BIG EAST match to league rival St. John's, 3-0 (30-25, 32-30, 30-23), at The Corral Friday night.
The Red Storm's offensive was too potent for the Bulls, as St. John's out-hit USF .328 to .130. SJU netted 10 more kills than USF (54 to 44) and committed less attacking errors, as the Bulls registered 12 more misplays, 28 to 16.
Although the second match was a close one for both teams as it was decided by two points, the Bulls (3-17, 1-9 BIG EAST) best offensive numbers came in game three when they hit .265 (.000 in game one and .130 in game two). However when the Bulls got their offense going in game three, the St. John's offense came out stronger and hit a blistering .615 in the game.
Sophomore Kristina Fabris was hitting the ball hard all night, leading the Bulls in kills with 19. The double-digit-kill match was the seventh straight for the Ontario, Canada, native and her 19th of the season (out of 20 matches).
Sophomore Michelle Stalbaum also came up big for USF, netting her 19th career double-double in a 14-kill, 15-dig outing. The Gainesville, Fla., native also tallied a team-high hitting percentage of .379. Stalbaum was also the only USF player to record 10-or-more digs in the match.
“I think Michelle had another great night ? back-to-back ? after our last match to DePaul, and I was really pleased with her performance,” USF coach Claire Lessinger said. “I thought Kristina went after it hard tonight especially in game two when we were trying to get some momentum and some sort of drive to turn it to be a 1-1 game. I think those two players did some really good things for us tonight.”
With game two up for the taking with the Bulls up by one point, 25-24, back-to-back USF misplays allowed the Red Storm to take a one-point advantage, 26-25. Both teams traded points back and forth eventually making the score even again at 29-29. St. John's got the needed points to post the game win, 32-30, thanks to a kill by Patti Hardiman and two USF errors.
USF will look to get back on the winning track when it faces Connecticut on Sunday at 2 p.m. at The Corral.
