Bulls Get Off To Slow Start On The Road

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (Oct. 8, 2005) ? The USF volleyball team (1-12, 0-5 BIG EAST) struggled in its second BIG EAST road series, losing to Rutgers, 3-0 (30-17, 30-28, 30-21), at College Avenue Gymnasium in New Brunswick, N.J. on Saturday afternoon.

Although game two was close between both teams, USF's offense struggled throughout the rest of the match. The Bulls only hit .077 in the match compared to Rutgers' .256. In all three games USF hit .100 or lower (.031, .100, .094) whereas the Scarlet Knights hit over .200 (.303, .220, .263).

Sophomore Kristina Fabris paced the way for the Bulls offensively and defensively, netting nine kills and 13 digs. Junior Johari Williams tallied a hitting percentage of .400 in the match, leading the team while setting a new career high.

Game one featured Rutgers (7-11, 2-3 BIG EAST) using a 6-2 run to take the early lead. The Bulls would come within one point of the lead, 14-13, before the Scarlet Knights' offense took charge, using a 16-4 run to close out the game for the 30-17 win. The Bulls offense couldn't get going, as they hit .031, whereas Rutgers hit a solid .303.

After USF scored the first point of game two to see its first lead of the match, 1-0, Rutgers answered back going on a 4-0 run to take a 4-1 lead. The four-point run was all the Scarlet Knights needed to get their offense going once again, as they only allowed the Bulls to come within two points four times before using a 14-8 run to take a 22-14 lead. Trailing by seven points, USF's offense surged, as it cut the lead to one point, 25-24, by going on a 10-3 run and then tied it up, 27-27. The lead would go back to Rutgers, 28-27, in which the Bulls tied up once again, 28-28. However the Scarlet Knights scored two-straight points to get their second-straight game win, 30-28.

In game three, the Bulls took a 2-1 advantage before Rutgers went on a 4-0 run to make the score 5-2. USF would come within one point, 9-8, before a 9-2 run gave the Scarlet Knights an 18-10 lead. USF cut the lead down to five points, but the deficit proved to be too much for the Bulls to overcome as Rutgers closed out the game, 30-21, to complete the three-game sweep.

The Bulls will look to post their first road win and first BIG EAST win when they face Villanova on Sunday at 2 p.m.
