USF ties Providence, 0-0, in 2 OT

PROVIDENCE, R.I. ? The USF women's soccer team (5-2-1, 0-1-1, BIG EAST) battled the Providence Friars (3-4-1, 0-1-1 BIG EAST) to a 0-0 contest in double overtime at Glay Field, Friday afternoon, in Providence, R.I.
The draw earns USF its first point in the BIG EAST standings. It also marked the first shutout by a USF soccer team (men's or women's) in BIG EAST action.
USF's main scoring opportunity came during the second half in the 59th minute when midfielder Michelle Busky (Tampa, Fla./Wharton HS) dispossessed Providence midfielder Christie Gent, who attempted to move the ball to the Friars third of the field. Busky dribbled the ball up the field and fired a shot to the left corner of the net when Providence goalkeeper Ashley Fedyshyn made a diving save.
In the 62nd minute Busky once again tried to gain control of a lose ball but Fedyshyn charged off her line, preventing any scoring opportunity, keeping the score knotted at 0-0.
The Bulls recorded 14 shots in regulation, eight shots on goal.
In overtime, USF had a pair of chances to score on freekicks. In the 93rd minute of the match, senior Jenny Mulvihill took a freekick from 10 yards out that was saved by Fedyshyn.
Just a minute later, Mulvihill took yet another freekick that was blocked by a Providence defender.
In all, USF had 10 shots on goal compared to Providence's three.
USF out-shot Providence in the contest, 17 to 12.
The Bulls will return home to the USF Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 25, to compete in their first ever BIG EAST Conference home match when they take on No. 18/24 Connecticut. Game time is 1 p.m.
