PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 1, 2006) ? The University of South Florida women's soccer team dropped its third BIG EAST contest in as many games Sunday afternoon in New Jersey.
The Bulls (5-5-1, 2-3-0 BIG EAST) lost, 5-0, to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, who are now 9-1-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the conference.
Rutgers took control offensively from the start, scoring its first goal in the 12th minute of the match. Fifty-five seconds later, the Scarlet Knights took a 2-0 lead when the Scarlet Knights blasted a shot past USF goalkeeper Casey Garrett from 30 yards out.
With 22:15 remaining in the opening half, the Bulls had a scoring opportunity of their own, as senior Michelle Buskey made a cross to sophomore Ebony Robinson, who headed it towards the goal, but the Rutgers goalkeeper came up with a save for the Scarlet Knights, ending USF's scoring threat.
In the 25th minute of the game, Rutgers gave itself a 3-0 lead on a goal from a free kick, following a USF foul. Rutgers got its fourth goal of the match in the 57th minute of the game, off a rebound following a Garrett save. Two minutes later the Scarlet Knights ended their scoring attack with the fifth and final goal of the game.
USF, who was averaging 12.1 shots per game prior to today's event, took just five shots - one apiece from Buskey, Robinson, Lindsay Brauer, Autumn Browning and Jaleesa Scott - against Rutgers. The Bulls only had two shots on goal, as opposed to their 5.4 shots on goal per game average. Brauer and Buskey each registered a shot on goal in the conference match up.
Garrett made six saves in 73 minutes and freshman Mallori Lofton-Malachi made her third appearance of the season, collecting the fifth save of her career.
USF returns to the USF Soccer Stadium for a four-game conference homestand. On Friday, Oct. 6, the Bulls face nationally ranked West Virginia (No. 6/7) at 7:30 p.m., followed by a Sunday afternoon game with Pittsburgh (1 p.m.).
The following Friday/Sunday series will be played against Louisville at 7:30 on Oct. 13 and the 1 p.m. Cincinnati game on Oct. 15 will be the final regular-season home game for the Bulls.
