October 06, 2006 | Women's Soccer
TAMPA, Fla. (Oct. 6, 2006) ? The University of South Florida women's soccer team fell two goals short of No. 7 West Virginia Friday night at the USF Soccer Stadium with a 2-0 loss to the Mountaineers.
The Bulls are now 5-6-1 overall and 2-4-0 in the BIG EAST Conference.
The Mountaineers struck early on the Bull defense, as Deana Everett crossed a ball to Kim Bonilla in front of the USF goal for the first tally of the game at the seven-minute mark.
USF played tough defense the rest of the half and didn't allow the Mountaineers another goal until the 77th minute, when Krystle Kallman passed a long through ball to Deana Everett for her 13th goal of the season.
Senior goalkeeper Casey Garrett played well as she saved eight West Virginia shots, allowing just two goals. Mountaineer goalie Lana Bannerman made just one save, a shot by USF senior Jenna Ball.
Three other USF players took shots in the game, including sophomore Ebony Robinson, and juniors Lindsay Brauer and Autumn Browning.
USF was outshot 26-4 in the contest and the Mountaineers took seven corner kicks while the Bulls had none.
The USF women plan to rebound Sunday afternoon against Pittsburgh. The Panthers, who are currently 7-4-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the BIG EAST, arrive in Tampa on Oct. 8 after losing, 2-1, to Marquette on Friday, Oct. 6, in Milwaukee.
The USF-Pittsburgh series is knotted at 0-0-1 following a double-overtime 2-2 tie in Pennsylvania last season.
After this weekend's events, the Bulls will host just two more conference games this season as Louisville comes to town on Friday, Oct. 13 (7:30 p.m. kickoff) and Cincinnati ends USF's regular-season home schedule on Sunday, Oct. 15. Kickoff against the Bearcats will be at 1 p.m. at the USF Soccer Stadium.
