
USF Closes Out 2006 Regular Season at St. John's

QUEENS, N.Y. (October 20, 2006) - The University of South Florida men's soccer team (8-4-4, 4-2-4 BIG EAST) closes out the 2006 regular season with a trip to New York to face the St. John's Red Storm (8-5-2, 4-4-2 BIG EAST) on Saturday, Oct. 21 at Belson Stadium.
Both teams enter Saturday's game having already clinched spots in the 2006 BIG EAST Championship but, are still jockeying for position in the Red Division standings. USF is still battling for a post-season home match as well as a first-round bye, while St. John's is looking to seal up a first-round home game. The Bulls, who can finish the season in any spot (2 thru 5), need a win on Saturday, coupled with a Rutgers loss versus Louisville to earn the second seed in this year's tournament.
The Bulls are coming off a 1-1 (2OT) draw with Louisville on Wednesday and are unbeaten in the team's five outings. The tie versus the Cardinals ensured the Bulls their second-straight winning season in the BIG EAST. Hunter West returned to action this past week (missing eight games due to injury), scoring his third goal of the season during Wednesday's tie. The Bradenton, Fla., native's goal was the first one scored at home since Nov. 6, 2004 (vs. Louisville). Sophomore Jordan Seabrook leads all USF players with 14 points, registering six goals and two assists on the year. Junior Kris Raad has tallied a team-high six assist in 2006. Midfielder Jason Devenish, recorded his second assist of the season on Wednesday, notching a point in third-consecutive game.
Goalkeeper Dane Brenner enters Saturday's contest boasting an 8-4-4 record with a 0.76 GAA. The High Point, N.C., native has tied his career-best for shutouts in a season with six this year. His four draws are the most the senior net-minder has recorded during his time at USF.
St. John's comes into the final regular season game having lost three of its last five games. The Red Storm defeated Villanova (2-0) on Wednesday to clinch a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament. St. John's is led by Ryan Soroka, who has recorded four goals and six assists for 14 points this season. Goalkeeper Jason Landers holds an 8-5-2 record with a 0.93 GAA and seven shutouts in 2006.
Saturday will be the fourth meeting all-time between the two schools with the Bulls holding a 2-1-0 edge in the series history.
