South Florida Men’s Soccer Faces UCF in the War on I-4

TAMPA, Fla. (August 26, 2026) – University of South Florida men's soccer is set to face off against UCF in the War on I-4. The Bulls (1-1-0, 0-0-0 American) head to Orlando to take on the Knights (1-0-1, 0-0-0 Sun Belt) in a matchup Friday at 7:00 p.m.

This will be South Florida's first road matchup since Head Coach George Kiefer has returned to the helm. Kiefer is 10-2-0 all-time against UCF while coaching South Florida, and 4-1-0 on the road.

Setting the Stage
South Florida has started the year 1-1-0, coming off a 3-1 win at home against West Florida. UCF starts the year 1-0-1 and is coming off a 0-0 draw with an American Conference opponent, FAU. Just one goal has been scored in both the Knights' first two matches, while the Bulls' first two matches saw seven goals in total.

George Kiefer returns to South Florida for his 16th season with the Bulls in his second tenure, after spending the previous nine seasons away from Tampa.

The Bulls were picked to finish third in the American Conference Preseason Coaches Poll.

Series History
The War on I-4 for the South Florida men's soccer program dates back to 1979, when the Bulls defeated the Knights 2-1 at home in Tampa. South Florida leads the all-time series record 27-9-5, and is 12-3-4 on the road in Orlando. The last two matches between the programs ended in draws, including the Bulls' trip to Orlando in 2024. South Florida won in Orlando in 2022 and last lost in Orlando in 2018.

About South Florida Men's Soccer
The oldest varsity athletic program at South Florida, men's soccer competed in the school's first-ever intercollegiate athletic contest on Sept. 25, 1965, beating Florida Southern 4-3.

The Bulls have claimed 14 conference championships and made 22 NCAA Tournament appearances, including three trips to the Elite Eight. The program boasts 31 MLS draft picks, including two-time MLS Golden Boot winner Jeff Cunningham, 1994 World Cup Team USA star Roy Wegerle, and 2013 MLS Cup winner Dom Dwyer. Three men's soccer alumni and one coach have been inducted into the South Florida Athletics Hall of Fame: Fergus Hopper, Jeff Attinella, Jeff Cunningham & Dan Holcomb.

On Dec. 10, 2025, head coach George Kiefer was hired for his second tenure at South Florida. Kiefer previously led the Bulls from 2002-16, compiling one of the most successful stretches in program history as the Bulls went 162-86-51 (.627), earned four conference championships, and made 10 NCAA Tournament appearances. Under Kiefer, South Florida advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight in 2008 and 2011. His six NCAA Tournament victories remain the most in program history, and his win total ranks second all-time among South Florida head coaches.
