Men's Tennis Loses Close Match to No. 64 Old Dominion, 4-3
March 11, 2006 | Men's Tennis
Tampa, Fla. (March 10, 2006) ? The USF men's tennis team dropped a hard-fought match to No. 64 ranked Old Dominion Monarchs, 4-3, Friday afternoon at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
The Bulls (1-5) captured the doubles point in exciting fashion. With the best of three doubles matches tied at 1-1, it was up to the team of Juan Barragan and Mark Gattiker to take the doubles point. With the match against Nathanial Grover and Matthew Sands at deuce, Sands hit a shot long to give the Bulls the advantage. On the next serve senior Barragan came to the net and slammed the ball down the right baseline to earn the victory at the No. 3 doubles spot, 8-6.
Up 1-0 in the match, the Bulls couldn't muster enough strength to get past the ranked Monarchs. USF's only two singles wins came at the No. 2 and 6 spots where Federico Barton defeated Henrique Cancado, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) and Gattiker defeated Grover, 6-2, 7-6 (9-7).
The Bulls will return to the courts on Mon. March 13, and try to snap their four-match losing streak when they face I-4 rival Central Florida. First Serve is set for 2 p.m.
