
USF Closes Out 15-Game Homestand With Series Versus Seton Hall

Having played 12-straight game at home during the month of March, the University of South Florida baseball team (11-11, 2-1 BIG EAST) will close out it 15-game homestand with a three-game series versus the Seton Hall Pirates (6-12, 1-2 BIG EAST) beginning Friday, March 24. USF has registered a 7-5 record over the moth-long homestand, including its first-ever BIG EAST series win (2-1 over UConn last weekend). USF is coming off a 6-5 (12 innings) mid-week victory over the Vermont Catamounts. Sophomore Joey Angelberger had a big night, going 3-for-6 with three RBI and a run scored. Angelberger recorded the game-winning, walk-off home run in the bottom of the 12th to lead the Bulls to their 11th win of the season.
The Bulls are hitting .293 as a team with four home runs and 109 RBI. Leading the way for USF is senior Kris Howell, who is batting .381 with 11 RBI and 12 runs scored. Freshman Addison Maruszak is hitting .353 with 12 RBI and 14 runs scored. The freshman shortstop hit the game-winning, walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth to give USF its first-ever BIG EAST win. Junior Ty Taborelli continues to find success at the plate, having registered at least one hit in each of his last 11 games. The 11-game hitting streak is a career-best.
The USF pitching staff enters this weekend's conference series with a 3.72 ERA, combining for a total 174 strikeouts this season. Casey Hudspeth will get the start on Friday - his seventh start of the 2006 season. The Sarasota, Fla., native is looking for his third win of the season. Hudspeth holds a 2-2 record with a 3.58 ERA and 38 Ks. Saturday's starter is scheduled to be Daniel Thomas. The right-hander has collected 23 strikeouts while registering a 1-2 record and a 3.31 ERA. Saturday will be his seventh start. Left-handed hurler Davis Bilardello is slated to get the start on Sunday. The Vero Beach, Fla., native holds a 1-1 record and a 3.25 ERA. Bilardello has struck out 25 batters in 36 innings of action this season.

McDonald is 0-4 with a 4.08 ERA in five outings. Saturday's starter will be freshman Corey Young. The left-hander is 1-0 on the year with a 2.10 ERA in six appearances. Sophomore Dan Merklinger is slated to take the mound for the Pirates on Sunday. Merklinger is 2-3 with a 4.50 ERA in 2006.
