MACON, Ga. (March 26, 2006) ? The University of South Florida softball team rebounded from its two losses yesterday and defeated Siena College, 8-0, in five innings in the consolation game of the Mercer Nissan Invitational at Sikes Field on Sunday morning.
After the Bulls (28-18) ended Saturday with three home runs against Troy University, USF returned to its offensive threat against Siena in the first inning. Tiffany Stewart hit a two-run shot to left field followed by a Danielle Urbanik solo homer to straight-away centerfield, giving USF the early 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second inning, USF scored five runs with two outs on the board, putting the Bulls up 8-0. After USF loaded up the bases, Urbanik tallied her second RBI of the game, drawing a walk to score a run. With the bases still occupied, sophomore Carly Griffin came up to bat and hit her first-career grand slam, blasting the ball over centerfield.
Bree Spence (11-6) got the complete-game shutout victory, pitching a two-hitter while striking out 10 Siena batters. The 10 strikeouts tie her career-high, which she set on Friday, March 24 against Siena at the Mercer tournament. The Clearwater, Fla., native gave up her second hit of the game to lead off the third inning and then retired nine straight, six of which were Ks.
USF will look to keep its winning momentum going when it opens up BIG EAST play on Friday at 2 p.m. against Seton Hall at the USF Softball Field.
