TAMPA, Fla. (April 29, 2006) ? A two-RBI single by Georgetown's Matthew Bouchard in the top of the seventh handed the University of South Florida baseball team (20-24, 9-11 BIG EAST) a 4-3 loss to the Hoyas (20-25, 6-11 BIG EAST) on Saturday, April 29 at Red McEwen Field. The loss evened the series at one game apiece.
Juniors Ty Taborelli and Nick Cardieri led USF with three hits each versus the Hoyas. Taborelli went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored on the afternoon. Cardieri recorded his eighth double of the season, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. For the second-consecutive game USF registered double-digit hits, producing 10 versus Georgetown on Saturday.
Starting pitcher Daniel Thomas scattered eight hits over six innings to earn a “no decision”. The Tampa native struck out seven Georgetown batters while allowing just one walk. Relief pitcher Nick Manganaro suffered his third loss of the season, allowing two runs on two hits in two innings of action. Closer Chase Lirette was called upon in the ninth inning, holding Georgetown scoreless in the game's final frame. The Tallahassee, Fla., native struck out two batters while allowing no base runners.
Taborelli scored the first run of the game in bottom of the first to give USF a 1-0 lead. The Hoyas responded with a run in the top of the second on a squeeze play by left fielder Derek deGrijs.
USF jumped out to a 3-1 advantage in the bottom of the fourth. RBIs by Cardieri (a double) and Taborelli (a single) gave the Bulls their largest lead of the game.
A run by the Hoyas in the top of the sixth cut USF's lead to 3-2. Bouchard's single in the top of the seventh gave Georgetown its first lead of the game, scoring two runs and swinging the score in the Hoyas' favor, 4-3. Unable to bring home the tying run in the final two innings, USF suffered its first-ever defeat at the hands of Georgetown, 4-3.
USF will close out its three-game series with Georgetown on Sunday, April 30. On the mound for the Bulls will be Davis Bilardello. Darren Sizemore will get the start for the Hoyas. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
