TAMPA, Fla. (April 9, 2006) ? The University of South Florida baseball team (14-19, 5-7 BIG EAST) were defeated by the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (22-8, 8-1 BIG EAST), 10-1, in the final game of a three-game series on Sunday, April 9 at Red McEwen Field. The loss resulted in a series sweep of USF by Notre Dame.
Sophomore Davis Bilardello pitched a solid six innings in his eighth start of the season, however was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs on six hits versus the Irish. Nick Manganaro, Jim Cassidy and Chase Lirette combined for three innings of relief.
USF was held to six hits on the afternoon with eight different batters reaching base safely (on six hits, two walks and two errors). A solo home run by right fielder Joey Angelberger highlighted the Bulls' offense on Sunday. Angelberger finished the afternoon hitting 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. The home run was first hit against Notre Dame in 24-consecutive games. Angelberger's long ball came in the bottom of the fifth, pulling USF within one run of the Irish.
Notre Dame scored a combined eight runs during the seventh and eighth innings to pull away 10-1.
The loss marked the eighth-straight overall and sixth-consecutive conference loss for the Bulls.
USF travels to Orlando, Fla., to face the UCF Golden Knights on Tuesday, April 11. Game time is 6:30 p.m.
