TAMPA, FLA. (July 12, 2006) Warren Bye, an assistant coach with the USF Cross Country and Track & Field teams since 2004, has been named head coach, USF Director of Athletics Doug Woolard announced today. Bye, who has 18 years of coaching experience including 11 at the NCAA Division I level, has been interim head coach at USF since Greg Thiel's resignation following the 2005-06 season.
In addition to a solid coaching background, Bye's experience in facility development at both Louisville and Indiana will prove helpful as USF embarks on construction of a $2.79 million on-campus track facility.
“In our search for a new head coach, we found that we had the absolute best candidate for the job right here at USF,” Woolard said. “His experience as well as his outstanding rapport with our student-athletes and his commitment to providing a sound environment for academics makes him the ideal choice.”
Barry Clements, USF's associate director of athletics who administrates the cross country and track programs added, “The process has convinced me that Warren Bye is the right person to lead our cross country and track programs to succeed in all aspects. His expertise, drive and commitment to excellence will enable us to be successful in athletic competition and in the classroom.
Bye said, “I'm excited to take over the USF program, and I look forward to the opportunity to inspire and provide opportunities for our student-athletes to achieve excellence in all their endeavors. Together, with a staff and dedicated student-athletes, we will strive to make USF and the community proud of our program. We're going to work very hard in our athletic and academic pursuits.”
Bye joined USF in 2004 and concentrated his efforts on the horizontal jumps and combined events in addition to managing USF's home meets and working as an EXCEL counselor in USF's Academic Services. He came to USF from the University of Louisville, where he was the women's cross country and track & field head coach from 2002-2004. In addition to helping train NCAA qualifiers and conference champions at Louisville, he was recognized for three straight years by the NCAA for the team's grade point average.
Bye actually spent a total of six years at Louisville, starting in 1998 as an assistant coach, focusing on sprints, hurdles, jumps and combined events. He has also been a volunteer assistant at Indiana University (1996-98), his alma mater. During that same period, he was Executive Director of the Indiana Track Club in Bloomington, Ind.
A 2000 graduate of Indiana, Bye earned a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology-Teaching (K-12). He is also a graduate of Crawford County High School in Marengo, Ind.
