TAMPA, Fla. (Sept. 2, 2006) ? The University of South Florida volleyball team picked up its second-straight win of the season, overpowering Texas-El Paso for the three game sweep, 3-0 (30-28, 30-19, 30-16), on Saturday afternoon in the Best Western Invitational held at The Corral.
With the win, the Bulls will face Towson at 6 p.m. with the tournament championship on the line as both teams are undefeated, 2-0, in the tournament.
USF (2-2) out-played UTEP (0-6) both offensively and defensively, leading the Miners in hitting percentage (.190 to .057), kills (46 to 34) and digs (69 to 60).
The Bulls took advantage of its size and athleticism in the front row and registered 13 total blocks to UTEP's 7.5. USF also used its serves to its advantage, scoring 10 points off of aces while the Miners only had four.
It was another complete team effort, with every player on the team contributing in some fashion. Seniors Ashley Reavis and Juliana Nogueira tallied double-doubles?Reavis had an 11-kill, 10-dig outing, while Nogueira tallied 43 assists and 11 digs. Newcomer Marcela Gurgel paced the way for the team's offense, leading the team with 12 kills and five aces. Kristina Fabris and Stephanie Augustavo each had a double-digit dig outing, while Fabris chipped in seven block assists and sophomore Nakia Williams had a team-high eight block assists.
After a close first game with USF only winning by two points, 30-28, the Bulls took control of the rest of the match and won by an 11-point margin in game two (30-19) and a 14-point margin in game three (30-16). Despite being out-hit in game one (.111 to .109), the Bulls offense surged in the final two games, hitting .145 in game two and .361 in game three compared to UTEP's .035 and .026.
