Bulls Collect First BIG EAST Win With 74-59 Victory Over Cincinnati

TAMPA, Fla. (January 14, 2007) -- Junior center Kentrell Gransberry notched his fifth double-double with 21 points and 15 rebounds to lead the University of South Florida past Cincinnati, 74-59, Sunday afternoon in the Sun Dome.

The Bulls are now 10-8 overall and 1-3 in the BIG EAST while the Bearcats drop to 9-7 overall and 0-2 in the BIG EAST.

Following an eight-point USF lead with 10 minutes remaining in the first, Cincinnati hit a trey to cut the margin to five. Three minutes later the Bulls had opened up the game 31-20, but again UC hit a triple to cut the double-digit lead.

USF kept Cincinnati at a distance the final four minutes of the half, never letting the Bearcats within less than eight.

The Bulls shot 46.2 percent (12-26) in the first period, led by senior forward McHugh Mattis' nine points and two blocks. Freshman guard Solomon Bozeman had six assists while Gransberry dominated the boards with seven.

Leading 35-24 at the half, the Bulls came out in the second period with a 15-3 run in the first eight minutes.

Back-to-back 3-point plays by Gransberry and a trey by senior forward Melvin Buckley put the Bulls ahead 52-27 at 11:44 in the second half.

Cincinnati struck back with 16 unanswered points to draw the game within nine. A layup by Mattis ended the Bulls' scoring drought, tallying USF's first basket in two minutes.

After the Cincinnati scoring drive, the Bulls kept at least a nine-point distance over the Bearcats the remaining eight minutes of the BIG EAST match up.

Along with Gransberry, three Bulls - Mattis, Buckley and Bozeman - also notched double-figures with 17, 16 and 10 points, respectively.

Mattis also had five blocks, two assists and two steals on his stat line.

Freshman guard Chris Howard tallied 10 assists and eight points as Bozeman added seven helpers to the win.

The Bulls next travel to Morgantown on Jan. 17, to play West Virginia at 7 p.m.
