WoMen's Tennis Serves Up Fifth Straight Shutout At Home
March 10, 2007 | Women's Tennis
TAMPA, Fla. (March 9, 2007) ? The University of South Florida women's tennis team fought off a gritty St. John's team by a score of 7-0, Friday afternoon for its sixth win of the season. The shutout marks the Bulls' fifth of the year from the USF Varsity Tennis Courts and third straight victory.
Battling the last conference foe that it will see until the BIG EAST Championships in April, USF (6-2) looked shaky in the top two doubles flights to open the match.
The No. 26 team of Shadisha Robinson and Gabriela Duch had to rally from a four point deficit against SJU's Alison Adamski and Nataly Tumsevica to take the contest with an 8-5 score.
On court two, Courtney Vernon and Jessica Sweeting could not handle the Red Storm's Maria Zivcicova and Ira Aleksova, as they fell 8-6.
The Bulls captured the doubles point however, with the fine play of Liz Cruz and Iciri Rai in the third spot, as they dispatched Ashley Harper and Gabija Gasiunaite, 8-0. The win moves the pair to a perfect record of 7-0 in doubles play this year.
The women gained their composure in singles play, however, to boast straight-set victories at each position for the second straight time. Against both BIG EAST opponents this year, West Virginia and SJU, the Bulls did not allow a single set to get away from them.
Sweeting improved her team-best record to 7-1, with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Adamski at the No. 3 spot.
No. 18 Robinson and No. 71 Vernon both saw a set in their matches go to tie-break, but each was able to ensure their wins at the top two positions. Vernon remains undefeated at No. 1, as does Robinson at No. 2.
Cruz and Duch each moved to 6-2 on the year with wins at the fourth and fifth spots, respectively.
Rai ousted Harper at No. 6, 6-3, 6-2 to earn her fifth win of the year.
The women will try to continue their good fortune at home with one more match before embarking on a west coast road trip. They will host Wyoming Sun., Mar. 11 at 1 p.m. Admission to the USF Varsity Courts is free.
