Bulls Open Up Speedline Invitational With 2-1 Victory Over Dartmouth

TAMPA, Fla. (March 16, 2007) ? The University of South Florida softball team opened up day one of the Speedline Invitational defeating Dartmouth, 2-1, on Friday night at the Greco Complex.
Bree Spence got the start but left the game in the sixth inning with the score knotted after giving up one run on six hits with four Ks. Cristi Ecks (7-4) pitched the final inning and two-thirds, striking out two while not allowing a hit.
Second baseman Britta Giddens led the team going 3-for-4 with the winning RBI, while freshman catcher Hillary Wolf registered her third-career RBI, knocking in the tying run.
After Dartmouth (1-5) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning, the Bulls (22-13) evened the score in the fourth. With Jessica Landau at first, Wolf drove in the equalizer off an RBI double to left center.
In the bottom of the sixth the Bulls scored the go-ahead run thanks to an RBI single by Giddens. A leadoff walk and a wild pitch moved Wolf into scoring position, and pinch runner Meghan Kowal scored off the base hit through the left side.
USF will resume tournament action on Saturday when it takes on Wisconsin at 2:30 p.m. and Ball State at 5 p.m. at the Greco Complex.
