WTennis Wins Sixth-Straight

ATLANTA, Ga. - The No. 28-ranked USF women's tennis team won their sixth-straight match Fri. evening, defeating the Winthrop Eagles, by a score of, 4-2, at the Lindsay Indoor Facility on the campus of the University of Georgia.
The win marked the fourth time this season the Bulls have defeated a school that has a bird as their mascot.
The Bulls (6-0), took two-of-three doubles matches from the Eagles (0-3) to begin the match as the tandem of Jessica Sweeting and Natalia Guevara defeated Paula Pereira and Larisa Bekmentova, 8-2 at the No. 3 spot. USF clinched the early point when the duo of Liz Cruz and Iciri Rai won their second-straight match at the top spot in as many days, out dueling Sara Abutovic and Elizavesta Zaytseva, 8-2
Junior Iciri Rai stayed hot on the season, winning her sixth-straight singles match, besting Lisa Wilkinson, 6-2, 6-3. Rai has held her opponents in check through USF's win-streak, not dropping more then three games in any set played. All six wins have come by way of straight sets.
For the first time this season, the Bulls haven't swept their opponent in impressive style.
Cruz and Zok dropped their first matches of the season but were picked up but their teammates Allyn Mueller and Lauren Shumate who clinched the match for the undefeated Bulls.
“This was a very hard-fought match, our toughest so far this season,” said USF head coach Agustin Moreno. “Winthrop is an extremely underrated team who should find their way into the rankings very soon.”
The USF women's tennis team will now have less then 24 hours to prepare for their biggest test of the season when they take on top- ranked, and defending national champion, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
“It's exciting to able to play a top caliber team like Georgia Tech,” said Moreno about tomorrow's match against the Yellow Jackets. “We have everything to gain in this match and nothing to lose. Tech is a very well coached team and I honestly believe if we come out and play to our strengths, we can come out with a victory.”
First serve is set for 1 p.m.
