Cincinnati, Ohio - - The University of South Florida volleyball team went on the road to play the Cincinnati Bearcats in Fifth Third Arena and took a 2-1 set lead, but could not finish off the match in the five set loss, 12-25, 25-21, 25-21, 14-25, 15-17.
USF (15-9, 5-4) had Cincinnati (21-5, 8-2) on the ropes in the fifth set by leading 14-11, needing just one of the next three points to close out the match. However, it was the never die home Bearcats who clawed their way back in it by fighting off all three and then ultimately winning by the 17-15 final tally.
Sophomore Allie Boaz returned to the Bulls' lineup after missing the past two matches and executed an outstanding attacking night. The right side hitter had nine kills on 16 attempts without a single error for a .562 percentage against UC.
Despite a slow start, Marcela Gurgel wound up with a team-high 15 kills for the match. Gurgel also added in two aces and seven digs.
Freshman Alli O'Connor smacked down 14 kills on a career-high 42 attempts and picked up seven digs.
Nakia Williams continued her solid play in road conference matches this season by grabbing nine kills and five blocks.
Leading the team and match with 21 digs was senior libero Stephanie Augustavo.
The Bulls had a difficult time trying to contain UC middle blocked Jessie Nevitt. The senior had 16 kills on 31 errorless attacks while compiling nine blocks (two solo, seven assists).
USF dropped the first set in convincing fashion, 12-25, but for the 10th time in 11 matches this season, the Bulls won the second set after falling behind 1-0.
The Bearcats improved their impressive win streak to 11 matches and remain perfect at home with a record of 12-0.
On Sunday at 2 p.m., USF will take the floor against Louisville in front of a nationally televised audience on ESPNU.
