Jones Paces Bulls Past Racers In Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico ? Dominique Jones tallied a game-high 23 points, including five 3-pointers, and the University of South Florida snapped a four game losing streak beating Murray State, 73-64, Saturday at Coliseo Deportivo in Toa Baja, Puerto Rico in the first of three games in the San Juan Shootout.

The Bulls shot a season high 52.2 percent from the field and held the Racers to 38.8 percent shooting to improve to 4-5 on the year. Murray State fell to 5-4 on the season.

USF plays Wright State Sunday at 5:15 p.m. ET and wraps up play in Puerto Rico against Oral Roberts on Monday at 5:15 p.m. ET. Both games can be heard on WHNZ 1250 AM.

Jones was 6-10 from the field and 5-7 from 3-point range. He was also 6-7 from the free throw line and added three assists.

Junior guard Mike Mercer added 12 points for the Bulls and senior Aris Williams pulled down a team high seven rebounds. Nine Bulls scored in the game with Jesus Verdejo scoring nine, Augustus Gilchrist eight and Chris Howard seven. USF also out-rebounded the Racers 36-29.

USF led 35-28 at the half and stretched its lead to 13 with 7:48 remaining in the game. Murray State's largest lead was one midway through the first half.

Postgame Notes

Dominique Jones scored 20 or more for the fourth time this season against Murray State. His five 3-point fields was a season high.

With 12 points vs. Murray State, Mike Mercer has scored in double figures in each of his three games this season. The 12 matched his season high he scored in his USF debut against Niagara.

With his 23 points, Dominique Jones moved past three players into 39th on the all-time USF scoring list with 692 points. With eight points he will become just the 39th player to score 700 or more points in USF history.

With three assists, Chris Howard moved into 12th on the all-time USF assist list with 264.
