USF Can't Get On Track, Downed By Oral Roberts

TOA BAJA, Puerto Rico ? The USF men's basketball team suffered from shooting woes for the second straight game and fell to Oral Roberts, 86-63, on Monday, Dec. 22, in its final game of the San Juan Shootout at Coliseo Deportivo in Toa Baja, Puerto Rico.

Senior guard and Puerto Rico native Jesus Verdejo led USF in scoring for the second straight game with 18 points but the Bulls shot just 36.8 percent from the field. USF shot just 31.8 percent in the first half and trailed 36-20 at halftime.

Not only did USF not shoot well, they ran into a super hot shooter in Oral Roberts' Robert Jarvis. Jarvis had 18 points at halftime and continued it in the second half, scoring a game-high 34. He was 12-16 from the field and hit 7-9 from 3-point range. Jarvis also added three free throws.

Freshman August Gilchrist added 11 points for the Bulls, with Alex Rivas, Dominique Jones and Puerto Rico native Gaby Belardo all scoring eight. Rivas led the Bulls with seven rebounds and Jones had a team-high five assists.

USF was without the services of junior guard Mike Mercer who sprained his right knee the night before against Wright State.

The Bulls dropped to 4-7 on the year, while ORU improved to 3-10 on the season.

USF returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 27, at home vs. Iona at 7 p.m. It is the final game before BIG EAST action starts on Friday, Jan. 2, vs. Syracuse at 8:30 p.m. at the Sun Dome.

Postgame Notes

Jesus Verdejo tallied a team-high 18 points vs. Oral Roberts.

The 18 points scored by Jesus Verdejo gives him 657 for his career, moving him into 46th on the all-time USF scoring list.

With two assists, Chris Howard now has 269 career assists and moved into 11th place on the all-time USF assist list.

With his eight points, Dominique Jones now has 700 career points, becoming just the 39th player to score 700 or more points in USF history.

Jesus Verdejo was the lone Bull named to the San Juan Shootout All-Tournament team.

Freshman Gaby Belardo tallied a career-high eight points.
